Description & Technical Information

Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug's philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may have reached twenty years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance: something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle and its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars: the first prestige cuvée re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.

This is the 164th creation of Krug Grande Cuvée and the second release to display the Edition on the label. Based on 2008, it is a blend of 127 wines from eleven vintages: the oldest being 1990 and the youngest 2008. The 2008 vintage has produced wines of tight structure, so purity of fruit and strong underlying acidity will likely give the wines huge ageing potential. Because this vintage has such a strong personality, the amount of reserve wines in the 164th Edition is higher than normal.

Krug ID: 414076 | Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée NV has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

Tasting Note: Exceptional freshness in the mouth is accompanied by notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat and jellied fruit. Rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit are enhanced by the subtlety of the fine and elegant bubbles. This has tremendous power of fruit, brioche, backed apples, vanilla and spice and a length of flavour that goes on and on. The precision of recent releases is unprecedented and just how many decades they might hold in the cellar is anyone's guess. The ultimate non-vintage.

This Krug Sharing Set includes one bottle of Grande Cuvée 164th Edition NV 75cl and two luxurious Reidel champagne glasses presented in a spectacular branded gift box (as shown in the pictures on the left).

“This was disgorged before the new ID codes were introduced in 2012, and no lot number I can find on the bottle. Very nervy, complex and assertive on the nose with more obvious acidity than the Egly Ouriet Brut Tradition Grand Cru disgorged in May 2012 tasted alongside. Tight and yeasty - it almost suggests it should be decanted before being served! Very tense.”

“The NV Grande Cuvée is absolutely stellar. This is one of the very best Grande Cuvées I can remember tasting. The flavors are bright, focused and beautifully delineated throughout, all of which make me think the wine will age well for many, many years. Lemon peel, white flowers, crisp pears, smoke and crushed rocks race across the palate in a vibrant, tense Champagne that epitomizes finesse. This release is based on the 2005 vintage and was disgorged in winter 2012/2013. The blend is: 44% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 19% Meunier. Krug ID: 113001.”

“ID code: 413073, disgorged Oct 2013. Immensely rich on the nose, verging on apricot and quince but with the sweetness of brioche. Opens up to gingerbread. Big and bold and creamy on the palate, tasting softer than the Dom Pérignon 2004 that preceded it. Bright and crisp and zesty on the finish, fresher than I expected from the nose.”

“The code on this bottle is 213018, meaning it was the 18th disgorgement of the second quarter of 2013 (obvious, innit?!). And those disgorgements are not necessarily just of Grande Cuvée. This blend is apparently based on the 2006 vintage and contains no fewer than 142 different ingredients back to a drop of 1990. Very steely and mineral on the nose. Tight and very dense. Still very uptight - even slightly austere at this early point in its evolution. Drink 2015-2022.”
