Champagne Krug Overview
+
Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug's philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may have reached twenty years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance: something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle and its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars: the first prestige cuvée re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.

This is the second release Krug Limited Edition case including three pairs of Grande Cuvée NV bottles each with a different base vintage: 2004, 2005 and 2006. Just 100 Limited Edition wooden cases have been produced.

Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 160 NV (2004) | Krug ID: 214025
This is the 160th creation of Krug Grande Cuvée. Based on 2004, it is a blend of 121 wines from twelve vintages: the oldest being 1990 and the youngest 2004. Reserve wines lend harmony to Edition 160, completing the blend without modifying the predominant characteristics of the year. This edition was disgorged in Spring 2014.

Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 161 NV (2005) | Krug ID: 313037
This is the 161st creation of Krug Grande Cuvée. Based on 2005, it is a blend of 134 wines from twelve vintages: the oldest being 1990 and the youngest 2005. Reserve wines in this blend bring brightness, richness and depth to the 2005 wines, mainly through well-developed old Chardonnays and multiple expressions of Pinot Meunier from different vintages. This edition was disgorged in Summer 2013.

Krug Grande Cuvée Edition 162 NV (2006) | Krug ID: 414082
This is the 162nd creation of Krug Grande Cuvée. Based on 2006, it is a blend of 142 wines from eleven vintages: the oldest being 1990 and the youngest 2006. Reserve wines lend structure and depth to the base vintage wines, which seemed to be somewhat too homogenous. In the warm 2006 vintage, Krug's many plots in the villages of Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Villers-Marmery provided shine and minerality to the blend. This edition was disgorged in Spring 2014.

Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée NV has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can use the ID codes above to discover more information about each blend on the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

“The NV Grande Cuvée is absolutely stellar. This is one of the very best Grande Cuvées I can remember tasting. The flavors are bright, focused and beautifully delineated throughout, all of which make me think the wine will age well for many, many years. Lemon peel, white flowers, crisp pears, smoke and crushed rocks race across the palate in a vibrant, tense Champagne that epitomizes finesse. This release is based on the 2005 vintage and was disgorged in winter 2012/2013. The blend is: 44% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 19% Meunier. Krug ID: 113001.”

“ID code: 413073, disgorged Oct 2013. Immensely rich on the nose, verging on apricot and quince but with the sweetness of brioche. Opens up to gingerbread. Big and bold and creamy on the palate, tasting softer than the Dom Pérignon 2004 that preceded it. Bright and crisp and zesty on the finish, fresher than I expected from the nose.”

“The code on this bottle is 213018, meaning it was the 18th disgorgement of the second quarter of 2013 (obvious, innit?!). And those disgorgements are not necessarily just of Grande Cuvée. This blend is apparently based on the 2006 vintage and contains no fewer than 142 different ingredients back to a drop of 1990. Very steely and 'mineral' on the nose. Tight and very dense. Still very uptight - even slightly austere at this early point in its evolution. Drink 2015-2022.”

“Light yellow-gold. Highly aromatic bouquet of fresh tangerine, candied fig, pear skin and ginger, plus a smoky mineral overtone. Tangy, precise and concentrated, offering a complex blend of citrus and orchard fruit and floral flavors underscored by chalky minerality. Juicy, tightly focused, youthfully angular Champagne, with nervy acidity adding cut to the long, sappy finish. I can see why some long-time Krug fans might be perplexed by this bottling but I think that it will be a really outstanding bottle with another five-plus years of cellaring.”

“Krug’s NV Brut Grande Cuvee ID 112001 -- disgorged already over the winter of 2011-2012 but then further aged before release -- reinforces the belief that, thankfully, even wine lovers of modest means who occasionally splurge on Krug Grande Cuvee will be rewarded with a wine that need not fear comparison with this house’s more limited and far more expensive bottlings, nor for that matter with any other wines of Champagne. The harmonious juxtaposition of creaminess and lees enrichment with bright, juicy citricity and of expansive richness with levity is stunning....Citrus zest notes segue seamlessly into the fine stream of CO2 without bitterness, while succulent white peach garlanded in lily-of-the-valley is laced with rich, subtly piquant nut oils and saliva-liberating salinity. Emerging suggestions of shitake and shrimp shell reduction compound the sense of capital-'U' umami in a vibrantly interactive and refreshing finish. A day after opening, this is even more vividly complex than it had been initially, with hints of fresh red raspberry lending an invigorating tang and sensation of berry seed-crunching that delivers strikingly harmonious counterpoint to both the luscious brightness of fruit and the nutty low-tones....The team at Krug has long taken pains to emphasize that the task of assembling their Grande Cuvee from a hundred or more lots reflecting reserves of widely varying ages is mind-bogglingly complex. So is the result.”

“This is all about balance and the integration of power and finesse, with finely honed acidity supporting flavors of quince paste, dried black cherry, spun honey and candied orange zest, while rich notes of roasted walnut, coffee liqueur and toasted cardamom resonate on the finish. Hard to stop sipping. Drink now through 2028. ”
