Although originally founded in 1812, the name Champagne Laurent-Perrier was not conceived until 1964. It was Bernard de Nonancourt who initiated Laurent-Perrier's rise to world fame. One of Champagne's most important figures in the 20th century, he officially took over in 1948 after a three-year apprenticeship at the Houses of Delamotte and Lanson. In his 62-year tenure, production grew from 80,000 bottles annually to over eight million. Under de Nonancourt, Laurent-Perrier were the first House to use stainless-steel vats and the first House to create both a zero dosage champagne (Ultra Brut) and a multi-vintage prestige cuvée (Grand Siècle). Sadly, de Nonancourt passed away in 2010 and Laurent-Perrier is now managed by his two daughters, Alexandra and Stéphanie alongside Cellar Master Michel Fauconnet and has become one of the region's largest producers, they are perhaps best known for Cuvée Rosé, the most recognised rosé champagne on the planet.

The idea of Grand Siècle was born from a simple observation: that nature would never provide the perfect oenological year, but that thanks to the art of assemblage, Laurent-Perrier could in fact create it. Always a blend of three exceptional vintages that perfectly complement each other, Grand Siècle was launched in 1959 as a blend of 1952, 1953 and 1955. One year is chosen for structure, one for finesse and one for freshness, creating a unique combination of power and balance from wines of the very best vintages. The grape juice is fermented in 100% stainless-steel tanks as Laurent-Perrier very much believe in keeping the juice away from oxygen and protecting those floral aromatics. Iteration is blended from 11 Grands Crus. From June 2019, L-P introduced 'Iterations' to identify the blend of Grand Siécle. This is the 20th time the house has created a magnum blend of Grand Siécle and only the second time a Les Reserves has been created.

This current release is a blend of 1999 (60%), 1997 (20%), and 1996 (20%). 54% Chardonnay, 46% Pinot Noir and 8 Grands Crus.

“After more than a 10-year wait since the previous Les Réserves, Laurent-Perrier has now decided to release the Grand Siècle iteration No.20 as a late-disgorged version. Benefiting from more than 20 years on lees, this magnum combines the soft lushness of 1999 (60%) with the freshness of the 1997 (20%) and the explosive fruitiness and acid line of the 1996 (20%). Composed of grapes from 11 of Champagne's 17 grands crus, this wine is only available in magnums and Jéroboams. It truly shines in magnum, with a flirtatious nose of freshly roasted coffee and sweet lemon tones. Beautifully evolved aromatics with lots of layers and plenty of fruity power left. So cool, crisp and fine on the palate, with the softest mousse. Superbly vivacious, caressingly creamy and lingering. At a wonderful drinking age now, but there is plenty of improvement potential left.”

“Les Réserves was born when Bernard de Nonancourt's daughter, Lucie Pereyre's mother, found some magnums and jeroboams of Grand Siècle No 17 in the Laurent-Perrier cellar after her father died in 2010 and they wanted to celebrate the house's bicentenary in 2012. This release, available in magnums only, is essentially long-aged Grand Siècle No 20, which was 60% 1999 and roughly 20% apiece of 1997 and 1996. The final blend was 54% Chardonnay, 46% Pinot Noir, made up of eight grands crus.
Drink 2022–2030

I was lucky enough to taste Laurent-Perrier's vintage champagnes 1999 and 1997 not that long before tasting this blend which is so much more complex and intense – as well as much fresher. Quite a feat! The wine is just this side of toasty but has massive impact and almost suggests some torrefaction. This is extremely vivacious while still being bone dry. Pungent with a hint of caramel but also lime – that's how broad the spectrum of flavours is. Very, very complete. Satisfying, revitalising – what I'd call a sore-throat wine, so intense is its finish. Difficult to see how anyone would be disappointed by this, the essence of Grand Siècle.”

“Subtle chamomile and dried bergamot peel notes appear first on the nose, followed by a lift of lemon and stone. Unusually fragrant, this is clearly evolved but far removed from the usual tertiary flavours of mature Champagne. This is a sublimation of citrus, herb and chalk. The palate has edges of beeswax but with an incredibly sprightly and fine mousse and utter freshness. It is a picture of ageless grace, so zesty, creamy, bright and so very chalky. Lemon shines long on this complete outlier with its profound, light and tonic-like body and uncommonly fragrant nature. Sourced from grands crus only, this Chardonnay-dominant wine is a blend of the 1996, 1997 and 1999 vintages, aged under cork for 21 years and disgorged with a dosage of 7g/L.”
