Description & Technical Information
The pioneering champagne in the Brut Nature category, Laurent-Perrier Ultra Brut NV is a wine with no added sugar, or zero dosage. First launched in 1981 by influential owner Bernard de Nonancourt, Ultra Brut is a true illustration of the House’s know-how. Custom-crafted from grapes of high sugar and low acidity from fifteen villages in ripe vintages where nature allows such rare characteristics to develop, it expresses the quintessential character of Champagne and is known as a “Great Wine Without Sugar”.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 15 Crus with an average rating of 97%
Grape Varieties: 55% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir
Reserve Wine: One or two reserve wines from a complimentary vintage
Ageing: 6 years on the lees
Dosage: 0 g/l
Drink: Now for 5 years

Tasting Note: There is an array of pear and grapefruit flavours with an underlying dash of citrus. Six years of age adds hints of biscuity complexity. Lovely freshness for those who love it ultra dry by itself, otherwise let it express itself with food.

Expert Reviews
Tamlyn Currin
“55% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir. RS 0 g/l. Base vintage 2009. Launched back in 1889 and very popular in the early 1900s in the UK, apparently.
Pale lemon white. Beautiful nose! Wet pebbles and lemon curd, crushed verbena. Tooth-achingly austere with a grapefruit-pith bitterness. Tight, tight bead. Lots of grapefruit and cold concrete. A ramrod of structure and acidity. Aloof, ruthlessly brut nature. (TC) ”
Stephan Reinhardt
“The current NV Ultra Brut is a 52% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir blend that is based on the 2007 vintage; it includes – as always – a reserve of the former Ultra Brut vintage, in this case 2004. In fact, the Ultra Brut is produced only every three years on average and the 2007 base is only the twelfth cuvée since the (1976), which was released in 1989. It is citrus-colored and has some very nice white-golden reflections. Bright and fresh on the intensely-flavored brioche nose, this vibrant, round and mouth-filling Champagne reveals a persistent mineral complexity and structure, along with very elegant and refreshing citrus fruit.”

“Rich, gunpowdery, highly toasty nose. Lemon curd, vanilla and green apple on the distinctly Chardonnay lead nose. Restrained and very dry on the vibrant and linear palate with autolysis coming through beautifully. Stylish, with a fine mousse and wonderful fruit purity. I like to give it a year or two to boost the toastiness.”
Richard Hemming MW
“Austere and withdrawn on the palate, with a fair dose of bitterness revealed by the lack of sweetness. A brutally honest rendition of the style. (RH)”
Josh Raynolds
“Pale yellow. Racy mineral- and ginger-inflected citrus and orchard fruits on the nose, with a subtle floral nuance adding complexity. On the palate, dry, incisive lime and green apple flavors show an intense, stony character and a touch of smokiness. Becomes fleshier with air and finishes spicy and long, with building citrus fruit character and very good focus.”
Roger Voss
“Ultra Brut, the original no-dosage Champagne, is the name and that’s just how this bone-dry wine tastes. It’s totally crisp, fruity, structured and fresh. Acidity from tight citrus combines with apples and pears to produce a wine that offers both fruitiness and dryness. Like many super-dry Champagnes, it will benefit from some bottle aging, so drink at least six months after purchase.”
Stephen Tanzer
“Light yellow. Tightly focused lemon/lime and quince aromas give way to deeper melon and nectarine with air. Shows impressive clarity and lift on the palate, offering bitter citrus pith and pear skin flavors and a hint of anise. Lingers with impressive tenacity, leaving notes of smoky minerals and sweet butter behind.”
