Although originally founded in 1812, the name Champagne Laurent-Perrier was not conceived until 1964. It was Bernard de Nonancourt who initiated Laurent-Perrier's rise to world fame. One of Champagne's most important figures in the 20th century, he officially took over in 1948 after a three-year apprenticeship at the Houses of Delamotte and Lanson. In his 62-year tenure, production grew from 80,000 bottles annually to over eight million. Under de Nonancourt, Laurent-Perrier were the first House to use stainless-steel vats and the first House to create both a zero dosage champagne (Ultra Brut) and a multi-vintage prestige cuvée (Grand Siècle). Sadly, de Nonancourt passed away in 2010 and Laurent-Perrier is now managed by his two daughters, Alexandra and Stéphanie alongside Cellar Master Michel Fauconnet and has become one of the region's largest producers, they are perhaps best known for Cuvée Rosé, the most recognised rosé champagne on the planet.

Laurent-Perrier choose to make vintages very rarely, only selecting the very best years. This makes their Brut Millésimé a rare and outstanding champagne that clearly expresses the specific character of each vintage in the Laurent-Perrier style. It is bottled and aged in Laurent-Perrier's cellars for almost eight years before being disgorged prior to release.

Weather: The 2002 vintage shaped up magnificently over the spring, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. Then followed a summer marked by long, sunny periods interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. This helped create a harvest that was marked by great homogeneity and superb balance. An extremely serene and generous year, 2002 is generally considered one of the best harvests in the last two decades.

Tasting Note: The initial aroma is marked by an attractive fruity character which then evolves to display notes of ripe fruits and honey. As its character is gradually revealed, there is a sense of complexity, depth of flavour and a still youthful freshness, typical of the 2002 vintage. The long finish is marked by persistent notes of yellow stone fruits. Now with a few more years age since release it is starting to show some lovely brûlée and more complex nutty characters. From such a top notch vintage there is no rush to drink this champagne, it will continue to improve for many more years.

Tasted blind. Deeper gold than most. Quite broad and even oaky – sort of Bollinger style. Quite evolved aromatically with a hint of cheesiness. Bone dry on the end. Seems as though it is just losing a bit of fruit in the middle. Falls off very slightly on the end, but compared with the others there is good energy and I ended up upgrading it from 16.5. Very slightly bitter finish.”
