Description & Technical Information
-
As the largest independent family-managed Champagne producer, Louis Roederer rank amongst the region's absolute finest. Established in 1776, the House today is managed by seventh generation family member Frédéric Rouzaud alongside long-time Chef de Cave and Champagne legend Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. They own an astounding 242 hectares of vineyards many in chalk rich Grand Cru villages covering two-thirds of their grape requirements. Roederer have become pioneers in biodynamic farming & by 2012 all 78 hectares the “Cristal Estates” are farmed using biodynamic methods. By 2021 Roederer have 115 hectares certified organic. All the grapes in Cristal & other vintage cuvee’s come from their own vineyards. The estate is made up of 410 plots which are fermented separately in one of the 450 stainless steel tanks in their Reims cellars. In 2020 Roederer replaced Brut Premier with “Collection” allowing each years non-vintage blend to be identified and “re-engineering” the non-vintage cuvee to maintain freshness in the light of global warming on the Champagne region. Today Cristal is, widely recognised as the world's most awarded prestige cuvée champagne.

In the heart of the Côte des Blancs, where Chardonnay expresses itself with such incredible finesse on the famous limestone soils, Louis Roederer selected four plots from their vineyards in Avize Grand Crus for their Blanc de Blancs 2014. These plots in Avize have distinct characteristics and in the difficult vintage only grapes from the south facing slopes attained the required level of ripeness. This pure-Chardonnay champagne quickly became the favourite wine of the Roederer family for major events and is 100% estate-bottled from the grapes of their historic vineyards. Fermented at a slightly lower pressure for ideal balance with the fresh acidity, 23% of the wines were fermented in wood casks.

Weather: 2014 was characterised by mild temperatures and frequent rainfall and a few weeks of high temperatures, a very solid vintage with good ripeness and acidity. Flowering began in June and summer was a combination of dry, wet and cold spells. Some regions saw some disease and Meunier in the Marne Valley didn’t have a great year and some of the Pinot Noir with its thinner skin made it more difficult for the red grapes. Harvest took place from 8th to 20th September. A year where it was necessary to select the red grapes carefully to maintain high quality. In general Chardonnay is the star of the vintage.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand Cru | La cote in Avize
Grape Varieties: 100% Chardonnay
Lees Ageing: 6 years
Disgorged: Spring 2021
Pressure: 5 bars - most champagne is 6 bars & lower pressure creates a softer mouthfeel
Dosage: 8 g/l
Drink: Now to 2026

Tasting Note: Delicate hints of flowers like honeysuckle and jasmine, ripe, fine and almost roasted citrus fruit. These are followed by iodized, sea-breeze aromas, combined with the warm, sweet notes of freshly-baked pastries. On the palate, the wine is dense, delicately zesty and invigorating. A predominantly saline character overlays flavours of citrus fruit and vanilla. The soft, melting bubbles give way to a limestone freshness revealing an end-palate that seems light and powdery at first, but which surprises us with a real acceleration on the finish created by its elegant tannins and roasted spices

William Kelley
“Disgorged with just over seven grams per liter dosage, Roederer's 2014 Brut Blanc de Blancs is showing brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, orchard fruit, freshly baked bread and white flowers, framed by subtly reductive top notes. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's pillowy and enveloping, with lively acids and a pearly, lower-pressure mousse, concluding with a long, chalky finish. Derived entirely from Avize, it's one of the great sleeper cuvées in contemporary Champagne.”

“Roederer's 2014 Brut Blanc de Blancs sizzles with tension and energy. Citrus, white flowers, crushed rocks and white pepper race across the palate. Most of the attention at Roederer falls to other wines, most notable the Cristals and the NV, but the Blanc de Blancs is a quiet wine that often overachieves, as it does in 2014. Superb.”

“There’s a lot here on the nose – real intrigue and layers. This is wine! Do I detect a little oak influence? And there is certainly refreshment but intellectual stimulation too. A very complete package, with a little more obvious acidity than the regular 2014 Brut.”
