Champagne Louis Roederer Overview
The story of Brut Nature began in 2003. This exceptionally sunny year revealed for the first time that certain vineyards in the heart of the Louis Roederer estate had remarkable potential. The clay hillsides of Cumières, Hautvillers and Vertus had no difficulty in resisting the heat and drought in the summer of 2003, producing intense and balanced grapes despite the weather. Moderate yields, a quick harvest and less racking due to the hot temperatures combined with fermentation in wooden casks led to the production of wines with incredible freshness. This prompted Roederer to carry out a series of bottling trials, fine-tuning the wines in 2003, 2004 and 2005, culminating in the selection of the 2006 vintage for the first Brut Nature creation. Produced solely from vineyards located on the Cumières terroir, these Pinot Noir grapes have such intense vinosity and exceptional maturity that no dosage is added to this cuvée.

The collaboration between Frédéric Rouzaud and French designer, Philippe Starck encouraged the Louis Roederer team to be innovative, leading to the creative design of the Brut Nature label. Louis Roederer Brut Nature 2009 marks the second production of this unique cuvée.

Weather: The 2009 vintage was a continental, sunny year with a real winter that was very cold and dry followed by a glorious sun-filled summer and almost no rain in August and September. The harvest was incomparable in terms of quality and produced consistent, fresh and crunchy grapes.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Premier Cru | Pinot Noir & Chardonnay: Cumières
Grape Varieties: 66% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay
Ageing: 5 years on the lees
Dosage: 0 g/l
Drink: Now to 2025

Tasting Note: On the nose an abundance of sweet flowers and yellow fruits such as peaches shine through with slight hints of nuttiness. On the palate a light and creamy taste combines with more pear and hints of citrus. The freshness is from the youthful nature of the champagne but the flavours are already nicely balanced.

“Lovely salted cracker nose – rich, yeasty, dry and tart. Shows a hint of fennel alongside the brisk citrus fruit. Flavourful and lengthy. (RH)”

“From Cumières, unusual clay soils. A field blend of the three varieties: 55% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Meunier. Chef de cave Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon’s idea is to return to the past – co-pressing and co-fermenting the three varieties from this 11-ha vineyard now owned by Roederer, who bought it from Leclerc Briant, who converted it to biodynamic, Demeter certified. 70% stainless steel, no malolactic fermentation, no chaptalisation, aged in tank for 9-11 months and bottled at relatively low pressure, under 5 atmospheres. It was not meant to be zero dosage but, as in 2006, no dosage was needed. A warm year is needed to get good ripeness for this wine. 2012 and 2015 will be the next vintages of this wine. Lécaillon had thought there would be a 2017 but summer was too wet.
A most unusual wine: a field blend with zero dosage and no malo. Smells extraordinarily rich for a Brut Nature with honeyed wild flowers, very biodynamic scent. Very dry and long on the end with slight, intriguing bitterness. Relatively rich for a no-dosage wine. ‘You taste clay on the cheeks and chalk on the tongue’, according to Lécaillon, who adds, ‘it’s more exotic, rounder and develops completely differently from a varietal champagne and cannot be categorised as such’.

“The 2009 Brut Nature is only the second release for this wine (the first was the 2006). Powerful, rich and impeccably layered, the 2009 possesses remarkable depth and all of the pedigree of these vineyards in Cumières. Apricot, brioche, dried flowers and chamomile take on striking shades of translucence in this beautifully expressive Champagne. The radiance and ripeness of the vintage gave Roederer the ideal conditions to make a Champagne with no dosage, and here it is, in all of its splendor. Roederer has made the decision to price this wine very modestly in Champagne terms. I can't imagine that is going to last too long. To be sure, the Brut Nature style might come as a bit of a shock to readers used to the Roederer house palate, but the wine is magnificent. It's as simple as that.”
Bought directly from Louis Roederer's UK agent MMD, this is currently held in bond at Vinotheque in Burton-On-Trent, where it is cellared in ideal conditions and for same day deliveries small quantities are held in our London offices in a top of the range Eurocave
