Champagne Louis Roederer Overview
In 1876, Russia's Tsar Alexander II - a lover of Louis Roederer wines - asked the producer to create a special cuvée for his personal use which was unique, in both its style and bottle design. So Louis Roederer offered him an exceptional crystal bottle, containing the fruit of vines selected from the seven great crus on his estate. This cuvée would be offered in only the truly 'great' years in which the ripeness of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes could provide the subtle, precise balance that have now become the distinction of the leading prestige cuvée of Champagne.

2000 was a year seen by many as a miraculous vintage, early in the year the vines were hit by heavy rain, storms and hail in the winter, leaving a successful harvest on the brink. However, the year was saved by the hottest August and September on record in fifty years, providing the grapes with much needed sunshine and warmth. Harvesting began on 18th September and lasted two weeks.

The wine is a golden yellow with ultra-fine energetic bubbles. On the nose there is intense and subtle hints of fresh almonds and a slight floral note, then revealing peaches and a more intense chocolate and caramel. On the palate a fleshy initial taste of fruits, leads to a minerality on the mid-palate combined with a crispness that hails the exceptional Chardonnay grape in the blend. A wine that has improved with age and is sure to develop further.

Grape Varieties: 55% Pinot Noir, 45% Chardonnay
Dosage: 10 g/L

“Bright gold. Deep, subtly smoky nectarine and musky yellow plum aromas are energized by a suave mineral quality. Broad and fleshy, with deep, chewy pear, pit fruit and buttered toast flavors. A serious style, with velvety texture and excellent finishing punch. This has the concentration to repay cellaring but is open-knit enough to enjoy on the young side.”

“This is only the sketchiest of notes as I tasted this wine quite separately from the wines below, in a much less propitious glass. It seemed very very youthful and not especially structured. Obviously far too young to drink though I fear that won’t stop most Cristal drinkers popping the cork.”
