Champagne Louis Roederer Overview
+
In 1876, Russia's Tsar Alexander II, a long-time lover of Louis Roederer wines, asked the producer to create a special cuvée for his personal use which was unique in both its style and bottle design. Dissatisfied with standard champagne bottles that concealed the beautiful colour and effervescence from the eye, he requested that his personal cuvée be served in transparent crystal glass bottles with a flat bottom to foil the insertion of explosives by would-be assassins. Thus, Louis Roederer selected the best vines from seven Grand Crus on his estate and Cristal, the first prestige cuvée, was born.

Now world-famous, Cristal is produced only from the truly great vintages in which the ripeness of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes can provide the subtle and precise balance that is now the distinction of this cuvée. Between 20-30% of the wines are vinified in oak barrels and the final blend is matured for six years in the cellars and rests for twelve months after disgorgement. Recently, the Cristal vineyards have been converting to biodynamic farming methods and the House estimates that by 2020 all Cristal plots will be cultivated biodynamically.

Weather: The 2000 vintage was seen by many as a miraculous year. The vines were hit by heavy rain, storms and hail in the winter, leaving a successful harvest on the brink. However, the vintage was saved by the hottest August and September in fifty years, providing the grapes with much needed sunshine and warmth.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand Cru
Grape Varieties: 55% Pinot Noir, 45% Chardonnay
Ageing: 5 years on the lees
Dosage: 10 g/l
Drink: 2011-2019

Tasting Note: A golden yellow with ultra-fine energetic bubbles. On the nose there is intense and subtle hints of fresh almonds and a slight floral note, revealing peaches and more intense chocolate and caramel aromas. On the palate a fleshy initial taste of fruits leads to a minerality on the mid-palate combined with a crispness that hails the exceptional Chardonnay grapes in the blend. A champagne that has improved with age and is sure to develop further.

“57% Pinot Noir, 43% Chardonnay. Usually Pinot Noir is Montagne de Reims rather than Aÿ but in 2000 they had to use more Aÿ than usual. 10-15% malo.
Quite an opulent nose. Lovely stage of evolution. Beautifully dense and tightly laced. Very complex and layered. Admirably persistent. This would be a great Cristal to drink now. Smoky.
Drink 2013-2027”

“Bright gold. Deep, subtly smoky nectarine and musky yellow plum aromas are energized by a suave mineral quality. Broad and fleshy, with deep, chewy pear, pit fruit and buttered toast flavors. A serious style, with velvety texture and excellent finishing punch. This has the concentration to repay cellaring but is open-knit enough to enjoy on the young side.”

“This is only the sketchiest of notes as I tasted this wine quite separately from the wines below, in a much less propitious glass. It seemed very very youthful and not especially structured. Obviously far too young to drink though I fear that won’t stop most Cristal drinkers popping the cork.”
