The 2026 release of Louis Roederer Cristal 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of one of Champagne's greatest wines. It also represents another important step in the evolution of Cristal under Chef de Cave Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon.

Having joined Louis Roederer in 1996 and become Chef de Cave in 1999, Lecaillon recognised early that Champagne would need to adapt to a warming climate. From the beginning of the new millennium, he transformed the Cristal Estate through organic and then biodynamic viticulture, with all vineyards supplying Cristal farmed biodynamically by the 2012 vintage. Combined with continual refinements in the cellar, this long-term vision has preserved Cristal's hallmark freshness, precision and expression of its chalk terroir, qualities beautifully showcased by the outstanding 2018 vintage.

THIS IS A PRE RELEASE OFFER WITH STOCK AVAILABLE FROM LATE SEPTEMBER
As the largest independent family-managed Champagne producer, Louis Roederer rank amongst the region's absolute finest. Established in 1776, the House today is managed by seventh generation family member Frédéric Rouzaud alongside long-time Chef de Cave and Champagne legend Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. They own an astonishing 242 hectares of vineyards many in chalk rich Grand Cru villages covering two-thirds of their grape requirements. Roederer have become pioneers in biodynamic farming & by 2012 all 78 hectares the “Cristal Estates” are farmed using biodynamic farming methods. By 2021 Roederer have 115 hectares certified organic. All the grapes in Cristal & other vintage cuvee’s come from their own vineyards. The estate is made up of 410 plots which are fermented separately in one of the 450 stainless steel tanks in their Reims cellars or in large wooden barrels. In 2020 Roederer replaced Brut Premier with “Collection” allowing each years non-vintage blend to be identified and “re-engineering” the non-vintage cuvee to maintain freshness in the light of global warming in the Champagne region. Today Cristal is, widely recognised as the world's most awarded prestige cuvée champagne.

Marking 150 years since its creation, Cristal’s origins are as dramatic as they are illustrious. In 1876, Russia's Tsar Alexander II, a long-time lover of Louis Roederer wines, asked the producer to create a special cuvée for his personal use which was unique in both its style and bottle design. Dissatisfied with standard champagne bottles that concealed the beautiful colour and effervescence from the eye, he requested that his personal cuvée be served in transparent crystal glass bottles, easier to spot poison and with a flat bottom to foil the insertion of explosives by would-be assassins. Thus, Louis Roederer selected the best vines from seven Grand Crus on his estate and Cristal, the first prestige cuvée, was born.

Cristal brut is normally drawn from a maximum of 45 grand cru vineyard plots, but the 2018 vintage represents 57 sites owned by Champagne Louis Roederer. Four extra plots include Chardonnay sites that would normally be reserved for Roederer’s vintage Blanc de Blancs and eight Pinot Noir plots aged between 20 and 25 years, just slightly younger than typical for Cristal plots, but in this year they brought vitality and energy to the blend. As a result, Cristal 2018 includes around 43% Chardonnay, a slightly higher proportion than usual.

2018 is the sixth vintage of Cristal to be created from 100% bio-dynamically farmed grapes.

Weather: 2018 was a very hot and dry year, but also generous and... very healthy. After an unusually wet winter, the spring was mild and stormy. The summer was particularly hot, dry, and sunny, breaking even the records set in 2003. The harvest was abundant, and the grapes were in near-perfect condition, giving us lovely, elegant, fruity wines.

Tasting Note: On the palate, it is the Pinot that takes the lead – concen- trated and wonderfully enveloping, with a viscosity ba- lanced by a fine-grained tannic structure. The bubbles are perfectly incorporated into the wine’s juicy, enveloping body. The white soils show through on the mid-palate, bringing a saline note (oyster shells) that creates a delicious umami character and a mouthwatering finish. A child of the chalk, Cristal 2018 radiates remarkable freshness despite the very sunny vintage. It unfolds smoothly and gracefully, like a great perfume: Chardonnay sets the top notes with lemony, saline freshness, while Pinot Noir provides the base notes with a captivating, powdery texture.

Chef de Cave History at Champagne Louis Roederer:

Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon 1999 - Current | Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon has been the Chef de Cave at Louis Roederer since 1999, making him one of the youngest to hold the position in Champagne. He joined the company in 1989 and has played a significant role in shaping the house's style and approach to winemaking, particularly in the area of organic and biodynamic practices. He was instrumental in the transition of Louis Roederer to biodynamic farming, which now covers a large portion of their vineyards. Lécaillon's background in viticulture and oenology from the École Nationale Supérieure d'Agronomie in Montpellier, France, has been instrumental in his success. His work has had a significant impact on the renowned Cristal cuvée. Lécaillon's work at Roederer Estate in Tasmania and Anderson Valley, California, has provided him with a broad understanding of winemaking in different regions. Since taking the position, he has become the youngest Chef de Cave in Champagne.

“The 2018 Cristal opens a new chapter for Roederer. The Cristal estate is composed of 45 parcels. In better vintages, most of the 45 parcels are used for the blend. The 2018 vintage brought with it elevated ripeness and generally low acids. Longtime Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon was forced to cast his gaze wider, to look for parcels that offered a touch of freshness. Lécaillon expanded his palette to 57 parcels. The result is a Cristal unlike any other I have tasted. Orchard fruit, dried flowers, spice, chalk and herbs are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. Floral and savory overtones are quite distinctive. Lécaillon reduced oak ferments, racked very quickly after fermentation and used all his best Chardonnay lots for Cristal, so much so that there is no Blanc de Blancs. He bottled earlier than normal and chose a crown capsule with a liner that allows less oxygen transfer than the norm here. Taken together, those choices paid off handsomely. In tasting, the 2018 is positively stunning. Its linear energy and brilliance are a bit reminiscent of the 2014, but its flavor profile is completely different from any Cristal I can remember tasting. Dosage is 7 grams per liter.”
