Champagne Louis Roederer Overview
+
In 1974, almost 200 years after the establishment of Champagne Louis Roederer and 100 years after the invention of Cristal, Jean-Claude Rouzad decided to create a Cristal Rosé. To achieve this, he selected old-vine Pinot Noir grapes from the finest Grand Cru vineyards of A˙, which are now cultivated according to biodynamic principals. The unique calcareous soil, which gives the grapes an exquisite minerality, enables the vines to attain exceptional fruit maturity complemented by a crystalline acidity. The rosé content is produced using the saignée (bleeding) process after cold maceration for five to eight days in the liquid phase. As with Cristal, 20-30% of the wines are vinified in oak barrels and the final blend is matured for six years in the cellars and rested for eight months after disgorgement. Produced only in the very best years, Cristal Rosé is Louis Roederer's rarest champagne.

Weather: The 2009 vintage was a continental, sunny year with a real winter that was very cold and dry followed by a glorious sun-filled summer and almost no rain in August and September. The harvest was incomparable in terms of quality and produced consistent, fresh and crunchy grapes.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand Cru | Pinot Noir: A˙ | Chardonnay: Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger
Grape Varieties: 55% Pinot Noir, 45% Chardonnay
Ageing: 6 years on the lees
Dosage: 9 g/l
Drink: 2019-2035

Tasting Note: A pink salmon colour with a fine stream of bubbles. On the nose hints of forest fruits and blackberries. On the palate an abundance of cherries and strawberries with a vibrant mid palate. This vintage, from a year where Pinot Noir excelled, has all the fruit-forward intensity you'd expect from such a warm season. This will age tremendously.

“A wine of sublime delicacy and finesse, the 2009 Cristal Rosé is simply magnificent. The 2009 is surprisingly refined, silky and nuanced for a wine from a warm vintage. The red and floral-infused overtones are quite attractive, but it is the wine's exceptional balance that places it among the best new releases of the year. Over the years, I have had the chance to taste many vintages of Cristal Rosé, a Champagne that needs bottle age to be at its very best. I suspect that will be the case here as well. Don't miss it.”

“Typically delicate, pretty orange-hued colour. The detailed nose reveals layers after layers. Friendly with soft, ripe, ample yet fine-tuned fruitiness. In addition to the conventional peachy, spicy, creamy and toasty notes there is an element of wildness in the aromas. Lovely fleshy and super creamy palate with its bright but soft acidity fitting perfectly with the mellow yet radient style of the wine. Perfectly pure and supple with exemplary persistance and an a lovely freshness at the finish.”
