Description & Technical Information
-
As the largest independent family-managed Champagne producer, Louis Roederer rank amongst the region's absolute finest. Established in 1776, the House today is managed by seventh generation family member Frédéric Rouzaud alongside long-time Chef de Cave and Champagne legend Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. They own an astounding 242 hectares of vineyards many in chalk rich Grand Cru villages covering two-thirds of their grape requirements. Roederer have become pioneers in biodynamic farming & by 2012 all 78 hectares the “Cristal Estates” are farmed using biodynamic methods. By 2021 Roederer have 115 hectares certified organic. All the grapes in Cristal & other vintage cuvee’s come from their own vineyards. The estate is made up of 410 plots which are fermented separately in one of the 450 stainless steel tanks in their Reims cellars. In 2020 Roederer replaced Brut Premier with “Collection” allowing each years non-vintage blend to be identified and “re-engineering” the non-vintage cuvee to maintain freshness in the light of global warming on the Champagne region. Today Cristal is, widely recognised as the world's most awarded prestige cuvée champagne.

The story of Brut Nature began in 2003. This exceptionally sunny year revealed for the first time that certain vineyards in the heart of the Louis Roederer estate had remarkable potential. The clay hillsides of Cumières, Hautvillers and Vertus had no difficulty in resisting the heat and drought in the summer of 2003, producing intense and balanced grapes despite the weather. Moderate yields, a quick harvest and less racking due to the hot temperatures combined with fermentation in wooden casks led to the production of wines with incredible freshness. This prompted Roederer to carry out a series of bottling trials, fine-tuning the wines in 2003, 2004 and 2005, culminating in the selection of the 2006 vintage for the first Brut Nature creation. Produced solely from vineyards located on the Cumières terroir, these Pinot Noir grapes have such intense vinosity and exceptional maturity that no dosage is added to this cuvée.

The collaboration between Frédéric Rouzaud and French designer, Philippe Starck encouraged the Louis Roederer team to be innovative, leading to the creative design of the Brut Nature label. Louis Roederer Brut Nature 2006 is the first ever production of this unique cuvée.

Weather: The 2006 vintage was a year of mixed weather. It began with a rainy spell and late spring, but with little or no frost in the vineyards. Early summer was positive, with the months of June and July creating perfect conditions for flowering. Although there were some storms in late-July, the overall health of the vines was great since the weather remained hot through to the harvest with spells of rain in August promoting even healthier grapes.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Premier Cru | Pinot Noir & Chardonnay: Cumières
Grape Varieties: 66% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay
Ageing: 7 years on the lees
Disgorged: 2014
Dosage: 0 g/l
Drink: Now to 2020

Tasting Note: On the nose, Brut Nature 2006 has fruity aromas of pear and citrus. On the palate it really shines, bursting with a rich array of flavours, youthful energy and a delightfully creamy texture. This is a champagne that will benefit from decanting, gaining depth and roundness and really displaying the dry apple cider and red fruit flavours.

Stephan Reinhardt
“The 2006 Brut Nature is Roederer's first non-malolactic, zero dosage vintage Champagne; it is equipped with a distinctive label from French designer Philippe Starck. Based on 55% Pinot Noir, 25% Meunier and 20% Chardonnay from late ripening plots on dark clay soils in Cumières (which are picked and processed together), the Brut Nature shows a great purity and freshness on the delicate nose. Pure, lean and mineral on the palate, this is a finesse-full and very straight, lemon-fresh and tension-filled fizz with a very good finish. Disgorged in March 2014.”

Essi Avellan MW
“The new Roederer cuvée is all about bold, bright, transparent Cumières Pinot Noir expression. Generous, plush Pinot nose with beautiful purity of fruit and creamy complexity. Voluptuous, muscular palate with soft, balanced acidity. It takes its brut nature extremity very well even if we are missing here the hallmark Roederer sweet and sour playfulness.”
93/100
Josh Raynolds
“Light, green-tinged gold. Vibrant and focused on the nose, displaying scents of fresh citrus fruits, anise, dusty minerals and white flowers. Fleshy and dry, boasting excellent depth and focus to its bitter lemon zest and pear skin flavors deepened by a hint of sweet butter. Shows a nervy, stony quality on the finish, which hangs on with outstanding tenacity and subtle florality. This is the first new bottling for Roederer since the launch of Cristal Rose in 1974. French designer Philippe Starck was heavily involved in the blending of the wine as well as responsible for the packaging.”

Joshua Greene
“Philippe Stark and Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon collaborated on the concept and philosophy behind this wine, a blend of three parcels on what Lécaillon calls a "single coteau" in the deep, cold clay soils of Cumières. He harvested all the grapes together, at the optimal moment for pinot noir when the meunier was a bit overripe and the chardonnay less than perfectly ripe, crushing and co-fermenting them (half the lot in large oak vats, half in stainless steel), eventually bottling the wine with low pressure (4.5 kilos of pressure rather than the typical six). It's a wine that needs decanting, gaining depth and roundness as it opens from extremely dry cider apple and barely ripe nectarine to red fruit flavors, roses and vanilla bean. The texture is what Lécaillon believes ties this wine to Roederer's style; here, that texture seems to me to fall somewhere between the cottony abrasion of chalk and a mouthwatering, cloud-like mist.”
93/100
Alison Napjus
“Sleek and minerally, this firm Champagne is softened by a swathe of silky texture, offering a tapestry of persimmon, pear, chalk and lemon zest flavors, with rich hints of pastry and chopped almond. Graceful and ethereal, this features a lasting saline impression that echoes on the finish. Drink now through 2026.”
16.5+/20
Jancis Robinson MW
“Savoury, dry nose and very uncompromisingly dry on the palate. Quite a test! Just a little austere on the palate. But impressive persistence. Perhaps this is just too young? Very serious and well intentioned…”
94/100
James Suckling
“A delicious collaboration with France's guru designer of cool, this goes against the grain of Louis Roederer and has no dosage, making it very dry. It's dense and powerful with layers of fruit. It's also full and almost spicy with a long and powerful finish. Soft texture too. If you closed your eyes, it tastes like a red. Starck actually was involved with the blend; he says it's so good you almost don't need a bottle. But the bottle makes it. A blend of two-thirds pinot noir and one-third chardonnay. No malo. Drink now.”
93+/100
Antonio Galloni
“After much anticipation, the 2006 Brut Nature makes its debut with a bang. All of the classic Roederer signatures are in place, especially in its utterly beguiling, expressive bouquet. Hints of lemon peel, pastry, wild flowers and Chamomile linger on the pointed, crystalline finish. The Brut Nature emerges from estate-owned parcels in Cumieres and Hautvillers, so it is a unique blend, totally different from any of the other wines in the range. Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon plans to make the Brut Nature only in vintages that give him the natural ripeness he is looking for. The blend is 60% Cumieres Pinot Noir and 40% Hautvillers Chardonnay.”
