As the largest independent family-managed Champagne producer, Louis Roederer rank amongst the region's absolute finest. Established in 1776, the House today is managed by seventh generation family member Frédéric Rouzaud alongside long-time Chef de Cave and Champagne legend Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. They own an astounding 242 hectares of vineyards many in chalk rich Grand Cru villages covering two-thirds of their grape requirements. Roederer have become pioneers in biodynamic farming & by 2012 all 78 hectares the “Cristal Estates” are farmed using biodynamic methods. By 2021 Roederer have 115 hectares certified organic. All the grapes in Cristal & other vintage cuvee’s come from their own vineyards. The estate is made up of 410 plots which are fermented separately in one of the 450 stainless steel tanks in their Reims cellars. In 2020 Roederer replaced Brut Premier with “Collection” allowing each years non-vintage blend to be identified and “re-engineering” the non-vintage cuvee to maintain freshness in the light of global warming on the Champagne region. Today Cristal is, widely recognised as the world's most awarded prestige cuvée champagne.

A great Rosé champagne must be made from very ripe grapes – sometimes difficult to obtain in the Champagne climate. As a result, Louis Roederer has chosen to invest in one of the earliest Champagne crus villages, Cumières, for which the steeply-sloping, shallow clay and limestone soils face south and benefit from additional light reflected from the river Marne, enabling great phenolic maturity to be achieved. In these select terroirs, Louis Roederer applies the precision wine-making methods required to craft a saignée rosé. The Chardonnay is from the north facing slopes in Chouilly, bringing bright and fresh notes.

Weather: 2013 was characterised by a particularly late growing cycle. The never-ending winter was followed by a very cool, late spring. we had to wait until the start of July for flowering to begin – something we hadn’t seen in Champagne for quite some time! Fortunately, summer was glorious with plenty of sunshine, record temperatures and very low rainfall, ideal for the ripening of the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. the temperatures were cool for the October harvest and the resulting wines are elegant and fresh – the signs of a “classic” vintage.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 90% Grand & Premier Cru
Grape Varieties: 67% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay

Tasting Note: On the palate the wine is soft and smooth yet also piercingly fresh. A well-integrated wine with excellent body, pleasant freshness, long length and delicate mouthfeel. the body softens gradually and coats the palate with a velvety smoothness underpinned by a pleasant salinity and delicate hints of tannin from the flesh and skins of the Pinot Noir grape. The finish is fresh, long and very persistent.
As the largest independent family-managed Champagne producer, Louis Roederer rank amongst the region's absolute finest. Established in 1776, the House is currently managed by seventh generation family member Frédéric Rouzaud alongside long-time Chef de Cave and Champagne legend Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. Today, Champagne Louis Roederer own an astounding 240 hectares of vineyards in the very best locations that cover two-thirds of their grape requirements and are pioneers in biodynamic farming, having converted a total of 50% of its holdings to accommodate production using biodynamic methods. Their portfolio begins with Brut Premier, one of Champagne's most seductive non-vintage cuvées and ends with Cristal, perhaps the world's most recognised prestige cuvée champagne.

Top quality grapes are the cornerstone of Roederer's style and account for their characteristic purity and elegance. Their portfolio begins with Brut Premier, one of Champagne's most seductive non-vintage cuvées and ends with Cristal, perhaps the world's most recognised prestige cuvée champagne. Created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II of Russia, the iconic Cristal is the essence of Roederer, matched only in decadence and luxury by its pink equivalent, Cristal Rosé.

Chef de Cave History at Champagne Louis Roederer:

Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon 1999 - Current | Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon has been the Chef de Cave at Louis Roederer since 1999, making him one of the youngest to hold the position in Champagne. He joined the company in 1989 and has played a significant role in shaping the house's style and approach to winemaking, particularly in the area of organic and biodynamic practices. He was instrumental in the transition of Louis Roederer to biodynamic farming, which now covers a large portion of their vineyards. Lécaillon's background in viticulture and oenology from the École Nationale Supérieure d'Agronomie in Montpellier, France, has been instrumental in his success. His work has had a significant impact on the renowned Cristal cuvée. Lécaillon's work at Roederer Estate in Tasmania and Anderson Valley, California, has provided him with a broad understanding of winemaking in different regions. Since taking the position, he has become the youngest Chef de Cave in Champagne.

Antonio Galloni
“The 2013 Vintage shows the compelling interplay of ripeness and high acids that are so typical of the year. The Vintage is built on a core of Pinot from Verzy, with Chardonnay from Chouilly, on the Cramant border. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2013 is a fabulous Champagne will reward readers with many years of exceptional drinking. The saltiness of Chouilly Chardonnay is a wonderful foil for Pinot here. Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon continues to bump up the Pinot here, as he takes the Vintage back to the blend that was used in the 1840s. Dosage is 8.5 grams per liter.”

“Light salmon pink, orange reflections; fine mousse. Fine red berry and cherry fruit underlaid with hints of tobacco, savouriness, meadow herbs, delicate orange zest and honeydew melon notes. Juicy, elegant, finely-meshed, balanced and round, fine acidity, red berry fruit on the finish; tight, a little stone fruit on the aftertaste. Versatile, good potential.”

“Pale salmon colour. Pure and pristine, for the time being youthful, toast-laden fresh berry nose. The palate is perfectly fresh, vibrant and radient and full of delicious cool fruit.”

“The 2013 Brut Rosé Vintage is gracious, perfumed and lifted. Sweet floral notes and red berry fruit are finely sketched in a Rosé that emphasizes energy and persistence. There is plenty of depth to the 2013, but it is more implied rather than overtly stated, as is the case with the 2012. Readers who enjoy subtle, nuanced Roses will find much to admire.”

“The Roederer 2013 Brut Vintage Rosé has a lovely light pink color and opens with highly delicate red fruit and flowery aromas. The wine is light, fresh, pure, very delicate and stimulatingly salty. Very energetic and at the same time caressing. The finish displays pink grapefruit, blood orange and lime zest flavors. Highly stimulating in its purity, freshness and citrus character. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon finds it less vinous than the 2012, but he thinks the 2013 has huge aging potential. Disgorged in January 2018, tasted at the domaine in May.”

Roger Voss
“This wine is already mature, with layers of toast over the crisp texture. There is a happy contrast between fruit and more complex, secondary flavors. This ripe, elegant wine is now ready to drink.”

Jeb Dunnuck
“The 2013 Champagne Brut Rose is a more elegant, medium bodied Champagne that shines for its balance and seamless texture. Beautiful caramelized cherry, orange blossom, and strawberry notes all emerge from the glass, and it gains richness and depth with time. With its bright, lively style and a great finish, this is another beautiful wine from this estate.”
