Champagne Louis Roederer Overview
+
Fascinated by the aromatic diversity of Pinot Noir in Champagne, Louis Roederer use the structure and power of the Pinot Noir grapes from the Montagne de Reims to create their Brut Vintage blend. Exposed to the north-east, these grapes mature much more slowly, producing wines that are sometimes rough and closed at the beginning of the ageing process, with a character that intensifies and becomes more refined through ageing in wood over long periods. Thirty percent of the wine is matured in oak casks and Brut Vintage is matured for at least four years in the cellars and rested for six months after disgorgement to attain optimal maturity. It is the Pinot Noirs from the Grand Cru rated village of Verzenay in particular that give this champagnes its velvety, creamy and elegant palate.

Weather: The 2009 vintage was a continental, sunny year with a real winter that was very cold and dry followed by a glorious sun-filled summer and almost no rain in August and September. The harvest was incomparable in terms of quality and produced consistent, fresh and crunchy grapes.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 90% Grand & Premier Cru
Grape Varieties: 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay
Ageing: 4 years on the lees
Dosage: 8-10 g/l
Drink: 2017-2027

Tasting Note: A ravishing bouquet on the nose which is generous and deep, ruled by the red fruits that dominate the blend. Orchard fruits on the palate combine with soft, mineral qualities. With age, this vintage is certain to develop and increase in structure.

“Estate bottled, so always from same 10 parcels, chosen for their style. Soil is more influential than blend. From 7 ha in Verzenay on chalk and clay. The Pinot Noir is a bit austere with some oyster shells. Plus 3 ha of south-east-facing Chouilly Chardonnay. 70% very cool Pinot Noir and 30% ripe Chardonnay fermented separately. Sometimes one of the 10 blocks is not used. Up to 50% of the Pinot is fermented in large old oak. No malo. They released the 2009 before the 2008. Dosage 8 g/l.
Broad, savoury nose – really quite meaty! Lots of depth on the nose. Racy, bone dry and rather majestic on the palate. Big and bold.
Drink 2017-2026”

“Deep flavoured and exciting. Relatively rich (because of the vintage presumably) but with a great array of flavours. Long. A really satisfying drink. Lots to enjoy. Though not as long as the Pol Roger 2008.”

“Discreetly fruity nose with red fruit dominance, soft spicy and honeyed tones. Up-front palate with round body and big, soft mousse. Lovely twist of acidity at the end.”
