Description & Technical Information

All Louis Roederer vintage champagnes are made using grapes from their own estate. Fascinated by the aromatic diversity of Pinot Noir in Champagne, Louis Roederer use the structure and power of the Pinot Noir grapes from the Montagne de Reims to create their Brut Vintage blend. Exposed to the north-east, these vineyards produce grapes that mature much slower, thereby making wines that are sometimes rough and closed at the beginning of the ageing process. However, the character of the Pinot Noir intensifies and becomes more refined through long ageing in wood. It is the Pinot Noirs from the Grand Cru rated village of Verzenay in particular that give the champagnes their velvety, creamy and elegant palate.

The Chardonnay from the most east facing vineyards in Chouilly brings the richness and generosity to the champagne. Some of the wine (the percentage varies each year) is fermented in large oak tanks and once in the bottle, the champagnes ages on the lees for at least four years and is rested for six months after disgorgement to attain optimal maturity.

Weather: The 2012 weather has been hallmarked by many as very challenging but has created some stunning Champagne. Relatively low yields due to various weather conditions throughout the year. The winter months brought some frosts and hail which damaged the early stages of bud burst. August and September were very warm and this helped rescue and give the grapes a stunning maturity.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 90% Grand & Premier Cru all from the Roederer Estate
Grape Varieties: 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay
Ageing: 4 years on the lees
Dosage: 9 g/l
Malolatic Fermentation: 16%
Drink: Now to 2030

Tasting Note: A subtle bouquet on the nose, with a vibrant freshness. Citrus notes, lemon and almonds combine on the mid-palate. Hints of toast and brioche with great acidity shines through right through to the finish.

Antonio Galloni MW
“Roederer’s 2012 Brut Vintage will give readers a very good idea of what to expect in this vintage. Racy and voluptuous, with striking resonance, the 2012 is ample, creamy and wonderfully inviting. Baked apple, brioche, pastry, spice and light tropical notes all flesh out in a radiant Champagne that drinks well right out of the gate. There is plenty of vintage 2012 concentration and ripeness, and yet the Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon managed to retain considerable energy here as well. This is such a compelling Champagne.”

Jancis Robinson MW
“70% Verzy Pinot Noir. Plus Chardonnay from Chouilly, east-southeast-facing. No malo because it was such a ripe harvest.
Pale straw gold. Explosive nose. Rich and explosive. Lécaillon’s best Pinots since 1990, he says ('but both are beaten by 2018'). Lots to chew on. Tight but rich and generous on the mid palate at the moment. This may shut down, Lécaillon thinks.”

“Layered complexity of subdued toastiness over bright, fragrant fruitness. Light-weight yet intense, ripe fruity profile. Beautifully racy acidity on the linear, driven palate. Focused, creamy and long. ”
