Bought directly from Moet Hennessey UK Ltd, the bottles are stored in bond at London City Bond Eton Park, in ideal conditions at a constant 13°C. For same-day deliveries, small quantities are kept in our office cellar, where the temperature is maintained between 11–13°C. We source all our bottles directly from the Maison or their official UK office, eliminating the risk of poor storage. This is crucial, as champagne quality is highly sensitive to heat: temperatures above 18°C accelerate maturity significantly, which compromises quality.
Moët & Chandon are the most famous producers in Champagne. First founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, it was the marketing acumen of Rémy Moët which initiated the brand's international fame and mass volume production. Since then, Moët & Chandon have grown by acquiring other champagne estates, selling them forward and keeping their prestigious vineyards. Such large-scale production could only operate under the leadership of a truly superb Chef de Caves and in Benoît Gouez, Moët have one of the best. With a ten-man oenologist team led by chief Dom Pérignon winemaker Vincent Chaperon, Benoît has access to the most academic minds and palates in the region, no doubt a huge driving factor behind his success. Now proprietors to the largest amount of land: some 1,190-hecatres of rich limestone soil, and the largest extent of cellars: over twenty eight kilometres.
Every Grand Vintage is unique and original, the Cellar Master's interpretation of the singular year that is produced. The Möet & Chandon Grand Vintage spirit is founded on three essential values: Freedom of interpretation, selection of the year's most remarkable wines and individuality of the vintage. The 75th vintage since the House was founded in 1743, 2013 completes a succession of vintages ending in '3' almost uninterrupted since 1923 (the exception being 1963).
Weather: 2013 was characterised by a particularly late growing cycle. The never-ending winter was followed by a very cool, late spring. we had to wait until the start of July for flowering to begin – something we hadn’t seen in Champagne for quite some time! Fortunately, summer was glorious with plenty of sunshine, record temperatures and very low rainfall, ideal for the ripening of the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. the temperatures were cool for the October harvest and the resulting wines are elegant and fresh – the signs of a “classic” vintage.

Tasting Note:Light golden yellow with fine persistent bubbles. The Champagne's maturity is immediately apparent, with autumnal notes of roasted chestnuts, toasted buckwheat, rich nuts, honey and nougat. White fruit is then revealed, reminiscent of a mealy apple or a beautifully ripe pear. Aromas of iodine, dried flowers and pine sap complete the bouquet. The palate is direct and energetic, supported, enveloped by a refined, grainy texture. The wine finishes with a pleasant hint of white grapefruit bitterness.

“Disgorged with five grams per liter dosage, Moët's 2013 Extra Brut Grand Vintage is a real success, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, fresh bread, Meyer lemon, nougat and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and fine-boned, with an enveloping core of bright, vibrant fruit and a pretty pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a precise, penetrating finish. Incisive but not austere, it's an impressive effort, reflecting good levels of maturity in this cool, late harvest. It's as fine a rendition of this cuvée as I can remember tasting.”

“A slowly ageing Champagne of a great, cool Chardonnay year. The stylishly toast-lined nose comes with a fruit salad of aromas: lime, green melon, pineapple and lemon pie. The palate has such tension and energy. It is not the friendliest of vintages: there is a degree of austerity for the time being; even the mousse feels a little nervous right now. Quite lean and juicy, with a lovely feeling of minerality on the long, lingering finish. This one will go far. Disgorged 9/21; dosage 5g/l”

“41% Chardonnay, 38% Pinot Noir, 21% Pinot Meunier. Dosage just 5 g/l. The back label also tells us 'the date mentioned hereafter is the disgorgement date' but there is no date on my back label – perhaps it's an early sample. Pale lemon yellow. Attractive evolution on the nose without its being at all heavy aromatically. Pretty aggressive mousse but nicely judged blend that is quite elegant and certainly not aggressively sweet. Though this of course belongs in a completely different bracket from the army of fine and more idiosyncratic single-estate champagnes.”

“The 2013 Blanc Grand Vintage is bright, focused and wonderfully vibrant. Lemon peel, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper lend notable brightness to this chiseled, finely cut Champagne. The 2013 is just a bit compact today. Perhaps it will gain body with time in bottle.”
Moët & Chandon winemaker Amine Ghanem talked us through the trials and tribulations of the 2018 vintage during our last visit to Champagne. He acknowledged it was a "challenging" vintage, but overall still "one of the best years region wide" - the resulting base wines he showed us were outstanding.
We met with winemaker Amine Ghanem to taste the 2017 vins clairs. As usual, discussion turned to the future of winemaking, of which Moët is at the forefront. Technological corks, thermovinification, thermal imagery - you name it, they're doing it.
Moët & Chandon MCIII is a champagne like no other. A blend of six different vintages, utilising three different ageing vessels and an assemblage of finished champagne and still wines; this is the ultimate in luxury.
Enlightening, educational and at times jaw-dropping, our visit to Moët was one of a kind. Amine Ghanem showed us the 2016 Vins Clairs, new Grand Vintage 2008, a 1988 magnum and the ultra-prestige MCIII.
