Bought directly from Moet Hennessey UK Ltd, the bottles are stored in bond at London City Bond Eton Park, in ideal conditions at a constant 13°C. For same-day deliveries, small quantities are kept in our office cellar, where the temperature is maintained between 11–13°C. We source all our bottles directly from the Maison or their official UK office, eliminating the risk of poor storage. This is crucial, as champagne quality is highly sensitive to heat: temperatures above 18°C accelerate maturity significantly, which compromises quality.
Moët & Chandon are the most famous producers in Champagne. First founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, it was the marketing acumen of Rémy Moët which initiated the brand's international fame and mass volume production. Since then, Moët & Chandon have grown by acquiring other champagne estates, selling them forward and keeping their prestigious vineyards. Such large-scale production could only operate under the leadership of a truly superb Chef de Caves and in Benoît Gouez, Moët have one of the best. With a ten-man oenologist team led by chief Dom Pérignon winemaker Vincent Chaperon, Benoît has access to the most academic minds and palates in the region, no doubt a huge driving factor behind his success. Now proprietors to the largest amount of land: some 1,190-hecatres of rich limestone soil, and the largest extent of cellars: over twenty eight kilometres.
Every Grand Vintage is unique and original, the Cellar Master's interpretation of the singular year that is produced. The Möet & Chandon Grand Vintage spirit is founded on three essential values: Freedom of interpretation, selection of the year's most remarkable wines and individuality of the vintage.
Weather: The 2002 vintage shaped up ideally over the spring, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. Then followed a summer marked by long, sunny periods interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. The vines were in good health and the dehydration of the grape berries helped them reach new heights of ripeness.

Tasting Note:Vanilla notes on the nose gradually expand into darker toastier notes of roasted almonds. On the palate deep flavours of fleshy fruits, peaches and grapefruit. There is a superb silky texture that combines with the full bodied Pinot Noir.

“Very vivid, ripe nose of fresh Mirabelle plums with an edge of smoke. The palate has an edge of phenolic bitterness, reminiscent of citrus pith and there are stirrings of maturity. Lively bubbles shine a light on a lovely earthiness with chalky edges. There is a hint of candlewax and some dried lemon peel and a lovely, toasty depth. The finish is brisk, clean, and has lovely chalky depth.”

“This bottle is in pristine condition, showing an elegant fruitiness in absence of any overripe aromas. Moet’s hallmark yeasty fragrance is there; so is opulent pear and candy fruit. Over time in the glass, toasty, pastry notes become more obvious. This May 2017 disgorgement is equally youthful in the mouth, showing impeccable fruit purity and a polished, balanced structure. No hurry here: this Champagne is on its way from great to outstanding.”

“26% Pinot Noir, 51% Chardonnay, 23% Meunier. Dosage 5.5 g/l. This is not the original release but is a late release disgorged in May 2017. 15 years on lees: 'a pretty sweet spot'. Very complex nose. Meaty, rich and (just) sufficient acidity. Long and complete. Chewy finish. Needs food! Very similar analytical profile at harvest as the 2012, apparently.”

“Disgorged in May 2017, the 2002 Extra Brut Grand Vintage Collection has acquired appreciable complexity from its 15 years sur lattes, offering up aromas of honeyed citrus fruit that mingle with nuances of smoke, iodine and brown butter. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and impressively vinous, with a textural attack, good depth at the core and a pinpoint mousse, concluding with a sapid, saline finish. It should drink well for another decade.”

“The 2002 Grand Vintage Collection is remarkably bright for a vintage that produced generally much more opulent Champagnes. Orchard fruit, almond, marzipan, chamomile, dried flowers and dried apricot all fill out the wine’s frame effortlessly. Rich and sensual, but also light on its feet, the 2002 is fabulous. The 2002 is 51% Chardonnay, 26% Pinot Noir and 23% Meunier. Disgorged: May, 2017.”
Moët & Chandon winemaker Amine Ghanem talked us through the trials and tribulations of the 2018 vintage during our last visit to Champagne. He acknowledged it was a "challenging" vintage, but overall still "one of the best years region wide" - the resulting base wines he showed us were outstanding.
We met with winemaker Amine Ghanem to taste the 2017 vins clairs. As usual, discussion turned to the future of winemaking, of which Moët is at the forefront. Technological corks, thermovinification, thermal imagery - you name it, they're doing it.
Moët & Chandon MCIII is a champagne like no other. A blend of six different vintages, utilising three different ageing vessels and an assemblage of finished champagne and still wines; this is the ultimate in luxury.
Enlightening, educational and at times jaw-dropping, our visit to Moët was one of a kind. Amine Ghanem showed us the 2016 Vins Clairs, new Grand Vintage 2008, a 1988 magnum and the ultra-prestige MCIII.
