Moët & Chandon are the most famous producers in Champagne. First founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, it was the marketing acumen of Rémy Moët which initiated the brand's international fame and mass volume production. Since then, Moët & Chandon have grown by acquiring other champagne estates, selling them forward and keeping their prestigious vineyards. Such large-scale production could only operate under the leadership of a truly superb Chef de Caves and in Benoît Gouez, Moët have one of the best. With a ten-man oenologist team led by chief Dom Pérignon winemaker Vincent Chaperon, Benoît has access to the most academic minds and palates in the region, no doubt a huge driving factor behind his success. Now proprietors to the largest amount of land: some 1,190-hecatres of rich limestone soil, and the largest extent of cellars: over twenty eight kilometres.

Every Grand Vintage is unique and original, the Cellar Master's interpretation of the singular year that is produced. The Möet & Chandon Grand Vintage spirit is founded on three essential values: Freedom of interpretation, selection of the year's most remarkable wines and individuality of the vintage. Moet & Chandon 2009 is the 73rd Grand vintage produced and is the first Pinot Noir dominated vintage in many years.

Weather: The 2009 vintage was a continental, sunny year with a real winter that was very cold and dry followed by a glorious sun-filled summer and almost no rain in August and September. The harvest was incomparable in terms of quality and produced consistent, fresh and crunchy grapes. The harvest took place during the habitat dates, beginning on September 12th in Aube and in the Epernay area to the 28th in Verzenay.

Put simply, Moët & Chandon are the most famous producers in Champagne. With production (rumoured to be in the region of thirty million bottles annually) accounting for over one-tenth of the entire region's, their role as an image builder for the appellation as a whole cannot be overstated. First founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, it was the marketing acumen of Rémy Moët which initiated the brand's international fame and mass volume production. Realising the business potential of his close friendship with Napoleon, Rémy even built the emperor a palace, Trianon on Avenue de Champagne.

Now proprietors to the largest amount of land: some 1,190-hecatres of rich limestone soil, and the largest extent of cellars: over twenty eight kilometres, Moët & Chandon's future is as secure as their champagnes are delicious.

Antonio Galloni
“Moët’s 2009 Extra Brut Grand Vintage is radiant, supple and voluptuous, with all of the generosity of the year front and center. Candied lemon, almond, chamomile, brioche and baked apple tart develop in a rich, inviting champagne that will drink beautifully upon release. A wine of pure and total pleasure, the 2009 is one of those Champagnes that disappears in an instant. ”

“There is a stunning reductive toastiness to this wine, which has enjoyed prolonged time on the lees. It does so under natural cork instead of crown cap, which greatly inhibits oxidative development. Coffee with cream, dark chocolate, apricots, dried apple and marzipan. It is creamy-rich on the palate, too, with sumptuous and textured leesy tones. Velvet smooth and mellow yet perfectly fresh, this gorgeous wine is in full bloom. Disgorged: 2023; Dosage: 5g/l”

“Beautiful fruity nose with ripe, lush Pinot Noir taking the lead role but there is also a strong presence of tropical Chardonnay fruit. Pristinely clean fruitiness and charmingly creamy texture on the easy to approach, soft palate, which comes with both length and width. A friendly, fruity vintage, which also has the structure to age. ”

“50% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay, 14% Pinot Meunier (highest proportion of Pinot Noir since 1996), from predominantly grand and premier crus. Aged for seven years on the lees. Dosage 5 g/l. Disgorged January 2017. Mytik Diam technological cork closure.
Tasted blind. A certain amount of tension on the nose. Pear juice and round and satiny. Quite similar in quality to the other vintage of Moët tasted alongside [the 2008]. Long. Rich. But chewy on the end. More obvious acidity [than the 2008]. ”

“Magnum. The year was full of excesses in all directions. Lush, fruit-driven vintage with the highest proportion of Pinot Noir since 1996.
Fine and rather majestic with an attractive savoury spine. Lots of fun and bumptious fruit and attraction. Lightly bitter finish. Quite long. A very good Grand Vintage. Melon-like fruit.”
