Palmer & Co Collection Blanc de Blancs 1985

Description & Technical Information
-
Palmer collection champagnes are made from the grapes of a single exceptional year. A prestigious collection of vintage champagnes, all of which are safeguarded in their 18-meter-deep chalk cellars. Each Collection is unique and possesses the distinctive, imitable qualities of that year’s outstanding grapes. These wines are elevated to their fullest expression through the know how, the experience of Palmer & Co and of course through the time factor, so closely connected to the inimitable Palmer style. Palmer Blanc de Blancs is created from Chardonnay grapes sources mainly from the magnificent terroirs of Villers-Marmery and Trépail. The fruits from these two terriors are blended with Chardonnay from Côte de Sézanne. The cuvées have been selected by cellar master Xavier Berdin and Palmer's four oenologists for their superior quality and ageing potential. Started in 1947 when Palmer was established, the Collection Range include some of the best vintages of the last 40 years: 1998, 1996, 1988, 1981, 1979 & 1976.

Palmer ID: L21525 | Each bottle of Palmer & Co can be identified by the ID on the back label. This enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Palmer & Co website.

Weather in 1985: This year is etched into vine growers’ memories as an exceptional ideal harvest in terms of quality, despite record freezing temperatures over winter (-30°C for several days), which irretrievably devastated part of the Champagne region’s vines. Fortunately, beautiful weather from 1 July allowed the grapes to ripen to their full potential. The Chardonnays in particular ripened beautifully, becoming refined and elegant. One can imagine the patience required at the time to allow the wines to reach their full potential.

Tasting Note: Bright golden yellow color, green-gold highlights. The superb 1985 vintage maturity is reflected in an intense and powerful bouquet amplifying when swirling out gently into your glass developing buttery and nutty notes, roasted flavors as well as candied fruit and gingerbread aromas. The mouth is elegant and vinous, in total harmony around liquorice and spicy flavors, enhanced by a silky and smooth texture which nevertheless keeps a remarkable freshness to this Champagne of exception. A vintage of an amazing Plénitude reaching the threshold of the sublime enhanced by a wonderful balance.

“Lots of lime and lemon and so much of that creamy soft texture from long lees contact. Has that peachy silk texture, perhaps a little soft on the finish but showing so well for its age.”
