In 1947, seven well-established and visionary winegrowers came together in a joint quest for ultimate perfection and founded Champagne Palmer & Co. The founders bought its current cellars from a failing Champagne House in Reims in 1959. Over the years, the cooperative has spread past Reims and now owns an impressive 450 hectares of vineyards, over 200 of which are classified Grand and Premier Crus. A large percentage of Palmer's vineyards are in the Montagne de Reims giving Palmer a unique source of chardonnay in these cooler aspect locations, Blanc de Blancs being one of the stars in the Palmer portfolio. Palmer are one of few producers to ferment large formats, everything bigger than Jeroboam, in the final bottle and up to Nebuchadnezzar, 15 litres, are made in this way.

Palmer ID: L19206 | Each bottle of Palmer & Co can be identified by the ID on the back label. This enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Palmer & Co website.

Palmer Blanc de Blancs is created from Chardonnay grapes sources mainly from the magnificent terroirs of Villers-Marmery and Trépail. The fruits from these two terriors are blended with Chardonnay from Côte de Sézanne. Although not stated on the label, each Palmer Blanc de Blancs NV released is entirely a vintage with no reserve wines.

Weather: Mostly a warm year, 2007 was characterised by unexpected major weather events. A warm spring was followed by a cool summer, although the end of the ripening process was excellent, with harvests taking place in ideal conditions.

In 1947, seven well-established and visionary winegrowers came together in a joint quest for ultimate perfection and founded Champagne Palmer & Co. After a first decade of impressive growth, the founders bought the cellars of a Champagne House in Reims in 1959. Over the years, the cooperative has spread past Reims and now owns an impressive 450 hectares of vineyards, over 200 of which are classified Grand and Premier Crus.

Champagne Palmer & Co take full advantage of allowing their wines to mature for an exceptionally long time and their reserve wines are carefully blended to create a rich and toasty style. Uniquely, Palmer are one of the only producers to ferment all champagnes in the bottles they are sold in - from tiny half bottles to huge 15L Nebuchadnezzar's. In 2015, their range underwent a name change, to now include the term Réserve, which better represents their long ageing periods and inclusion of reserve wines.

In 2019 Champagner Palmer opened its new modern winery symbolising Palmer’s respect for sustainable development, being just the second in Champagne, alongside Moët & Chandon’s facility in the Côte des Bar, to be certified HQE (High Environmental Quality).
Chef de Cave History at Champagne Deutz:

Xavier Berdin 2003 to present: The Cellar Master and his 4 oenologists are guardians of the Palmer & Co style, passionately watching over the wines of yesterday, today and tomorrow with unrelenting vigilance.

Michel Davesne 1985 to 2003: After a high school diploma in sciences, preparatory classes at the Lycée Clémenceau in Reims, and then the University of Compiègne, he became an engineer in biotechnology. Then followed posts at first Goyard, then at the CIVC*. In 1985, Champagne Palmer took him on as chief winemaker. He learned much at the co-operative, much of the practical part on the job. He passed his Diploma in Oenology, and spent in all some 18 years there before moving to Champagne Deutz in 2003. All the magnificent Collection champagnes being released from 2018 to present from the 80's and 90's show what a genius winemaker Michel was.

Nick Baker TFB Founder
“Has initial creamy character on the nose, good texture and balance on the palate. Slightly saline, freshness but with some age. Acidity seems up there which is keeping it refreshing and balanced. Some ripe apples, plums and pineapple come through with time in the mouth.”

“Medium-deep lemon. Mild nose with gunpowdery charred characters. Super intense, invigorating, creamy palate. Good roundness and softness of texture. Fresh with charm. A benchmark reductive, toast-enriched blanc de blancs. ”

William Kelley
“Tasted from magnum, the latest release of Palmer's NV Blanc de Blancs Brut is showing very well indeed, bursting from the glass with a ripe and expressive bouquet of grapefruit, orange zest, toasted bread, white flowers and nectarines. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with an elegantly textural attack, fine depth at the core, ripe but racy acids and a long, flavorful finish. This has always been one of Palmer's emblematic cuvées and this disgorgement—from early 2018—would appear to be a particular success.

Founded in 1947 under the name Producteurs des Grands Crus de Champagne, Palmer & Co is one of Champagne's best quality-focused cooperatives, and having recently selected a new importer, they are making a concerted effort to court the US market. Vinification is predominantly in stainless steel, and the proportion of reserve wines employed in Palmer's non-vintage blends ranges from 30% to 35%. Aging sur lattes is quite protracted. Their emblematic Blanc de Blancs was the highlight of this tasting, but all these releases showed well.

“Revisited from magnum with another year in bottle, the early 2018 disgorgement of Palmer's NV Blanc de Blancs Brut has continued to improve. Wafting from the glass with a toasty bouquet of citrus oil, orchard fruit, bee pollen, nectarines and iodine, it's medium to full-bodied and fleshy but precise, with fine depth at the core, racy acids and a pinpoint mousse. This comes warmly recommended.”

“Bright lemon colour. Stunningly toasty and charmingly sweetly fruity nose. Such complexity and finesse. On the palate it is polished and creamy with licorice and vanilla layers. Long taste in perfect harmony. Succulently fruity with some evolution but youthful still. A benchmark reductive, toast-enriched blanc de blancs. ”

“This needs a while to open up, but the rich, biscuity notes are absolutely worth the wait, perfectly tempered by vivd, brisk, pure lemon. The palate has a wonderful directness and a beautiful but sinuous concentration. The mousse is fine and persistent, rounded, fresh and with wonderful verve.”

“The latest release of Palmer's emblematic NV Blanc de Blancs Brut is showing very well, bursting from the glass with gently reductive aromas of crisp orchard fruit, toasted bread, nectarine and iodine. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and precise, with a pretty core of fruit, bright acids and an attractive pinpoint mousse, it's showing well today but will be even better with a little more bottle age.”

Tamlyn Currin
“Broad gunpowder-smoke and citrus-cream nose. A serious, competently balanced wine with sweetness that tastes deceptively higher than 6.5 g/l, full-sail fruit ending in a tight draw of sherbet-bright acidity. The Palmer Blanc de Blancs had a good track record of ageing well when it was a vintage wine, and this newer NV version tastes as if it will also take a good 10 years of cellar age.”
