Palmer & Co Brut Reserve NV

Palmer & Co Brut Reserve NV Nebuchadnezzar

Palmer & Co Brut Reserve NV
In 1947, seven well-established and visionary winegrowers came together in a joint quest for ultimate perfection and founded Champagne Palmer & Co. The founders bought its current cellars from a failing Champagne House in Reims in 1959. Over the years, the cooperative has spread past Reims and now owns an impressive 450 hectares of vineyards, over 200 of which are classified Grand and Premier Crus. A large percentage of Palmer's vineyards are in the Montagne de Reims giving Palmer a unique source of chardonnay in these cooler aspect locations, Blanc de Blancs being one of the stars in the Palmer portfolio. Palmer are one of few producers to ferment large formats, everything bigger than Jeroboam, in the final bottle and up to Nebuchadnezzar, 15 litres, are made in this way.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Premier & Grand Crus | CH Trepail & Villers-Marmery PN Verzenay & Mailly
Grape Varieties: 50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir
Vintage: 1996
Lees ageing: 21 years
Disgorged: Spring 2018
Dosage: 8 g/l
Drink: Now to 2030+

Tasting Note: Subtle notes of white flowers and citrus, combine with almonds to create an abundance of flavours on the palate. The silky and refreshing palate has a fresh acidity and great finesse on the finish. This old vintage is now very graceful, the long lees ageing and large bottle size give that attractive smoky character with an abundance of lime and lemon richness with great length
In 1947, seven well-established and visionary winegrowers came together in a joint quest for ultimate perfection and founded Champagne Palmer & Co. After a first decade of impressive growth, the founders bought the cellars of a Champagne House in Reims in 1959. Over the years, the cooperative has spread past Reims and now owns an impressive 450 hectares of vineyards, over 200 of which are classified Grand and Premier Crus.

Champagne Palmer & Co take full advantage of allowing their wines to mature for an exceptionally long time and their reserve wines are carefully blended to create a rich and toasty style. Uniquely, Palmer are one of the only producers to ferment all champagnes in the bottles they are sold in - from tiny half bottles to huge 15L Nebuchadnezzar's. In 2015, their range underwent a name change, to now include the term Réserve, which better represents their long ageing periods and inclusion of reserve wines.

In 2019 Champagner Palmer opened its new modern winery symbolising Palmer’s respect for sustainable development, being just the second in Champagne, alongside Moët & Chandon’s facility in the Côte des Bar, to be certified HQE (High Environmental Quality).
Chef de Cave History at Champagne Deutz:

Xavier Berdin 2003 to present: The Cellar Master and his 4 oenologists are guardians of the Palmer & Co style, passionately watching over the wines of yesterday, today and tomorrow with unrelenting vigilance.

Michel Davesne 1985 to 2003: After a high school diploma in sciences, preparatory classes at the Lycée Clémenceau in Reims, and then the University of Compiègne, he became an engineer in biotechnology. Then followed posts at first Goyard, then at the CIVC*. In 1985, Champagne Palmer took him on as chief winemaker. He learned much at the co-operative, much of the practical part on the job. He passed his Diploma in Oenology, and spent in all some 18 years there before moving to Champagne Deutz in 2003. All the magnificent Collection champagnes being released from 2018 to present from the 80's and 90's show what a genius winemaker Michel was.

“50–55% Chardonnay, 35–40% Pinot Noir, 10–15% Pinot Meunier. 25–35% reserve wines. Bottles spend three to four years on lees, magnums five to six years. Dosage 8 g/l. Date on label suggests it may have been disgorged 8 May 2017.
Mid lemon colour. Lemon-brioche nose. Much more low-key fizz than the Rosé. Just a suggestion of bubbles, despite a huge froth-up when the wine was poured. Chalky, chewy, lemon-zested palate. Spiky and angled – makes you hungry just to sip it. Proper appetite whetter. Bring on the oysters! (Or fish and chips…?) (TC)”

“With the lion's share of Palmer's 350 growers' vineyards being located on the Montagne de Reims, its fruit forms the core of this broad blend. The rest of the grapes come from Côte de Sézanne and Côte des Bar. Bright lemon in colour, with some depth. The overall note is charmingly, sweetly fruity, with an impeccable ground coffee tone adding layers. A complex mix of yellow and red fruit, but there is also a dark spiciness giving an element of interest. The palate is generous, with an age-mellowed velvety texture. However, the overall feeling remains light due to a super-stylish acid line. A remarkable-value non-vintage in an age-complexed, radiantly fruity and luxuriously toasty style. Dosage 7g/l”

“Complex, classy toast-lead nose. Plenty of pristine fruit, cream, vanilla, peach, marshmallow and candy. Soft, velvety palate with a fine mousse. Lively, playful, dancing palate with a lovely acid line. Long-lasting, pure, fruity finish. Compact and complete. Perfectly crafted and finely polished. Worth 93p in magnum in a great year such as the 2008 and 2013 based cuvées. ”

“The latest rendition of Palmer's NV Brut Réserve is quite reserved out of the gates, unwinding with notes of crisp orchard fruit, citrus zest and fresh bread. Medium to full-bodied, taut and tangy, with bracing acids and a pinpoint mousse, it's not quite as generous as its immediate predecessors have been.”

“A wonderfully fresh nose presents notions of ripe lemon flesh and zest, along with stone fruit. The palate has a zesty edge. The mousse is a bit on the frothy side but the flavours are fruity and brisk. Very much an aperitif style, enlivening but balanced.”
