Pierre Péters, one of Champagne’s most renowned growers, produces mostly Blanc de Blancs champagnes, which are rated as some of the finest produced in the region. The Domaine is based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger consisting of 82 plots over nearly 20 hectares of sustainably-managed vineyards, sixteen of which lie within the Côte des Blancs, primarily in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, as well as the other prized villages of Avize, Cramant, Oger and Vertus. Sixth-generation owner, Rodolphe Péters took over the running of the family estate from his father, François in 2008, having been involved in the assemblage since 2000. He initiated the house’s ‘perpetual reserve’ of reserve wines in the late 1990s. A graduate in oenology and business, Rodolphe believes that “a good winemaker must listen to his raw materials,” practising minimal intervention both the winery and the vineyards.

Les Chetillons is a small area that lies on an east-northeast facing hillside in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Each of the three parcels from ‘Les Chetillons’ was vinified separately. The wines were fermented in stainless steel and remained in tank on their lees (with regular tastings) until the assemblage. The bottles of ‘Les Chetillons’ are turned by hand using the traditional riddling method.

Weather in 2015: A wet winter and mild spring gave way to an exceptionally dry summer from mid-May onwards. Hot weather prevailed until mid-August, when the skies opened again. Rains gave way to fine, cool, yet sunny weather for the first two weeks of harvest, which commenced on August 29th. The 2015 vintage has a lot of common denominators with the 2003 vintage but the 2015s are showing a better balance of weight and freshness with their average potential alcohol level of 10.5% and total acidity of 6.9 g/l. An average vintage and we need to see more releases before we will know for sure how good the big names will be in 2015.

Tasting Note: On the nose it has an impressive aromatic richness, with aromas of spring flowers, white fruits, and citrus notes. The palate is vibrant with bright, fresh acidity and a delicate persistent mousse.

“Chardonnay from three plots in the celebrated Chétillons vineyard in Le Mesnil. At the time of tasting this is surely one of the top wines of the 2015 vintage, a year which was the first time Rodolph had ever seen drought stress in the Côte des Blancs. Yes, the heat and concentration of the year is there, in the potency of the dried mango, ripe stone fruit, papaya and peel fruit profile, but there is some compression and acceleration that carries the natural extract of the year. It is not a stony or mineral Chétillons, yet it retains some iodine/marine DNA behind the richness of set honey and white butter. Approachable for Chétillons, this will give its best earlier than many.”

“Disgorged with five grams per litre dosage, the 2015 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons has turned out well, unwinding in the glass with aromas of freshly baked bread, crisp orchard fruit, clear honey, warm biscuits and dried white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and muscular, it's a deep, compact wine structured around racy acids and chalky extract. It's a strong effort, but it will demand a bit of patience to reveal all its potential. Péters was careful not to pick too soon, classifying 2015 along with 2011 and 2007 as years defined by an early harvest where it was nonetheless critical to avoid picking too early.”
