Description & Technical Information

Pierre Péters, one of Champagne’s most renowned growers, produces exclusively Blanc de Blancs champagnes, which are rated as some of the finest produced in the region. The Domaine is based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger consisting of 82 plots over nearly 20 hectares of sustainably-managed vineyards, sixteen of which lie within the Côte des Blancs, primarily in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, as well as the other prized villages of Avize, Cramant, Oger and Vertus. Sixth-generation owner, Rodolphe Péters took over the running of the family estate from his father, François in 2008, having been involved in the assemblage since 2000. He initiated the house’s ‘perpetual reserve’ of reserve wines in the late 1990s. A graduate in oenology and business, Rodolphe believes that “a good winemaker must listen to his raw materials,” practising minimal intervention both the winery and the vineyards.

Base wines from Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger, Oger, Cramant and Avize make up 75-80% of the blend for the Extra Brut, with the remaining 20-25% made up of reserve wines from Rodolphe’s ‘perpetual reserve’ which is based on the 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1996 harvests. All base wines were fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, where they remained on lees (with regular tastings) until the assemblage. The Extra Brut was aged for a minimum of 36 months on lees before release

Tasting Note: With its low dosage, the Extra Brut is purer style of blanc de blancs. It has a soft, floral character on the nose, with notes of hawthorn and honeysuckle. On the palate, the wine has a fine mousse with delicate, persistent bubbles. The flavours are layered and complex with notes of citrus fruits, fresh pastry and roasted almonds that linger on the finish.

“The NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut is entirely from the 2014 vintage and was sourced in four parcels of the Côte des Blancs. Opening with potted ginger and white flowers on the clear, fresh, precise and chalky nose, this is a pure, fresh, elegant, beautifully dry and chalky grand cru with an expressive, stimulating iodine-inflected finish that reveals a persistent structure and freshness. This is a damned serious and chalky Blanc de Blancs that was disgorged in January 2018 with just two grams of dosage. Tasted at the domaine in April 2018.”

“Light, transparent nose. Very readable and transparent wine. Lifted with an impact that builds on the finish but is almost unnoticeable on the nose initially. This is a sort of Chablis of Champagne … but is not uncomfortably dry and tart with a light yeastiness on the finish. There's something distinctly floral about it. Even pretty.”
