Pierre Péters, one of Champagne’s most renowned growers, produces mostly Blanc de Blancs champagnes, which are rated as some of the finest produced in the region. The Domaine is based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger consisting of 82 plots over nearly 20 hectares of sustainably-managed vineyards, sixteen of which lie within the Côte des Blancs, primarily in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, as well as the other prized villages of Avize, Cramant, Oger and Vertus. Sixth-generation owner, Rodolphe Péters took over the running of the family estate from his father, François in 2008, having been involved in the assemblage since 2000. He initiated the house’s ‘perpetual reserve’ of reserve wines in the late 1990s. A graduate in oenology and business, Rodolphe believes that “a good winemaker must listen to his raw materials,” practising minimal intervention both the winery and the vineyards.

The code associated with each edition of these cuvées is in reference to the artist that Victor deeply admires and parodied (TB for Tim Burton). This is the first edition of the new Series of the now iconic cuvee L’Etonnant Monsieur Victor

Weather: 2015 is remembered for its classic growth cycle. The particularly mild winter gave way to a varied spring with a period of freezing temperatures followed by intense heat. The vines reached full bloom at the usual times, during a sunny and dry month of June. It was a glorious summer with plenty of sunshine and little rain. The ripening of the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays was given a boost at the end of August by some long-awaited rainfall. The crops were harvested in mid-September under the cool autumnal skies, giving rise to elegant, fresh and fruity wines, worthy of labelling as true “classics”.

Tasting Note: Brilliant gold in appearance, the cuvee has a very fine mousse and a persistent ribbon of bubbles. The nose is characterized by a mixture of rich, yellow fruit and acacia flower that evolve to give notes of saffron, citrus rind and hazelnut in the glass. The palate is dense yet smooth with a wonderful dimension of flavor, marrying layers of sweet spices, grapefruit, Mirabelle plum and fresh hazelnut.
The Pierre Péters estate, situated in the heart of the "Côte des Blancs" in the village of Le Mesnil sur Oger, has been a family house for six generations and has produced Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Champagnes since 1919.

Champagne grower-producer, the wines come exclusively from their own vineyards. Their house currently operates just over 19 hectares of Chardonnay, mainly located in the communes of Le Mesnil sur Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant.

The family has developed from generation to generation, its own selection of grapes (mass selection). They have been able to maintain and age vineyards which are now 30-years old on average. Each year in respect of the environment, they adapt their cultivation methods to obtain healthy grapes so that their Champagne expresses more precisely the richness, subtlety and the elegance of the great "terroirs" of the Côte des Blancs.
Pierre Peters Through The Years

1858: Gaspar Péters, native of Luxembourg, married a Miss Doué, owner of vineyards in Le Mesnil and started operation with about 2 hectares. Like their son, Louis Joseph Péters, in addition to their breeders and merchants status, they sold their whole harvest to trading businesses.

1919: Camille Péters, son of Louis Joseph was one of the first growers of the Champagne region to decide to harvest, handle and sell bottles under his name.

1929: Despite the global crisis, Camille Péters decided to develop marketing and started to sell his production under the brand name "Camille Péters".

1930: Camille Péters acquired 2.5 hectares at a place called : "Les Chétillons".

1932: Pierre Péters, eldest son of Camille, age 12, started to attend his first exhibitions alone and to develop sales.

1944: Camille Péters died suddenly and Pierre took over operations.

1946: Release of the first vintage under the brand Pierre Péters (1944). After his mother died in 1949, Pierre supported the education of his younger sisters. For 35 years, he devoted his life to develop the brand and its vineyards in the "Côte des Blancs".

1967: Following extensive health problems, Pierre transferred the family estate to François, his second son, who ensured the development and sustainability until 2008. During these 40 years, he increased the surface area to reach 17.5 hectares and he dramatically improved sales growth in France and abroad.

2007: Rodolphe Péters, oenologist-winemaker, joined the family house after 12 years of experience in companies close to the world of wine and Champagne. He took control of the family estate in 2008 and started to focus on the winemaking tool in an even more qualitative way. He has also paid particular attention to the development of the reputation and image of the family brand in France and abroad, which now represents over 80 % of the volume of bottles shipped.

2009: Release of the vintage "Rosé for Albane". A small revolution for our family domaine which has always produced Blancs de Blancs Champagnes!

2016: Release of the vintage series "L’Etonnant Monsieur Victor". An assembly crafted with the finest of our winery… A new family story to be told.

2019: Moving to our new premises and celebration of the Domaine's centenary, on the occasion of which we are releasing an anniversary cuvée called HERITAGE: a condensed version of 19 vintages produced by 4 generations. Launch of a new plot from the place called Montjoly in Mesnil sur Oger.

Expert Reviews

Tom Hewson
“Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs Grands Crus. This is a blend of 2015 Chétillons with 2014-based Réserve Oubliée. There is some alchemy in this combination, the precision of the Réserve Oubliée tempering some of the grip of 2015 and building a profile of boggling complexity; the weight and potency of dried orange and peach, preserved citrus and honey presents a sense of measured, profound development, but the texture is clear as glass, enlivened with a touch of oyster and nougat. Dancing, twisting and turning, this is compelling champagne that is presenting serious complexity even upon release.”

“Impressive. In fact, it is the best of the 2015-base wines at Peters, and also shows how important blending can be in Champagne. For this bottling, Rodolphe Peters blends one tank of his Chetillons and a tank of Reserve Oubliee. The result is a Champagne of uncommon complexity and pedigree. Bright, floral and effusive, the 2015 base Monsieur Victor is just gorgeous. There is a feeling of translucence that is beguiling. Hints of dried flowers, marzipan, brioche and hazelnut linger on the delicate, super-refined finish. I would prefer to drink this on the earlier side, as the first signs of aromatic nuance are starting to settle in.”

“A blend of the best vats of the Péters perpetual reserve with the best vats of Les Chétillons. It has long been Rodolphe Péters's intention to produce a blend that surpasses his vintage wines, yet I have generally preferred his vintaged Les Chétillons; in 2015, however, it is indeed the Étonnant Monsieur Victor that leads the portfolio. Unwinding in the glass with complex aromas of sweet orchard and stone fruits mingled with notions of spices, candied peel, freshly baked bread and toasted nuts, it's medium to full-bodied, racy and seamless, its deep core complemented by a pillowy mousse, concluding with a long, sapid finish.”
