Piper-Heidsieck Rare 1998 Champagne
|Piper-Heidsieck Rare 1998 - Magnum - 2 bts - 1.5L||Magnum - 2 bts - 1.5L||£385.00|
Today, production occurs alongside sister company Charles Heidsieck in an ultra-modern functional cuverie on the southern outskirts of Reims. Their characteristics differ quite considerably, with Piper opting for a fruitier and lighter style of base wines. In recent times, the House has shifted from royal accolades to becoming a favourite amongst celebrity stars. Indeed, the legendary Marilyn Monroe famously declared in 1953: “I go to bed with a few drops of Chanel No. 5 and I wake up each morning to a glass of Piper-Heidsieck; it warms me up.”
Cellar Master: Régis Camus
Winery Location: Reims | Champagne, France
Champagne Region: Montagne de Reims
Annual Production (bottles): 8,000,000
Rare 1998 is a blend of ten different Crus including Avize, Chouilly, Oger, Trépail and Villers-Marmery for the Chardonnay and Ambonnay, Ludes and Verzy for the Pinot Noir. Extreme temperature ranges in the 1998 season resulted in storms during the early summer months with lots of sunshine and long hot days during August and September. In general, wines from this vintage experienced high levels of sugar and acidity and their ageing potential is superb. This is only the fifth vintage of Piper-Heidseick Rare ever created.
Tasting note: A golden colour with a slight hint of green. The nose has an elegant touch of sandalwood and cedar with a bouquet of gingerbread and dried apricot. On the palate, intial citrus and orange flavours give way to a complex mid-palate of mango, cocoa and plums. Overall, this is a rich and well-balanced champagne. Given age, especially in magnum, this will be very rewarding.
Grape Varieties: 70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir
Dosage: 9.5 g/l
