Champagne Pol Roger Overview
+
Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs is made exclusively from the Grand Crus of the Côte des Blancs. The must undergoes two settlings, one at the press house immediately after pressing and another in Pol Roger's famous stainless-steel tanks. Second fermentation takes place in the coolest Pol Roger cellars, thirty-three metres below ground level at temperatures of just 9°C, some 2-3°C cooler than the cellars of other producers. The cooler cellars slow down bottle fermentation, producing a champagne with finer bubbles, a characteristic for which these small production releases of Pol Roger are known for. The final blend is aged for seven years in the cellars before disgorgment and release.

Weather: The 2009 harvest began with a particularly cold winter but mild spring temperatures helped avoid any frost damage. Some stormy spells boosted the vegetation in late spring and June and July were altogether variable with hot spells and rainy patches. The glorious August weather was perfect for the grapes growth, hot and dry days followed by cool nights led to rapid maturation. Harvest began on September 8th and ended on the 21st.

Tasting Note: The wine is a pale yellow-gold with a continuous bead of bubbles, initial notes on the nose is citrus with hints of almonds. White flowers and honey initially on the palate give way to a lemon freshness combined with a mineral character, a Cote des Blancs hallmark. The finish is long and finely balanced.

Well Pol Roger is never austere but this is one of their richer, more brioche-like wines. Really deep-flavoured but vivacious in terms of its persistent bead. I don't think I would immediately take it for a Blanc de Blancs blind, although I suppose it is more like a rich Chardonnay than anything you are likely to find from an avant garde grower during Champagne Week. Very expressive of this mellow vintage and definitely ready to enjoy. Very easy to drink without food.”
Bought directly from Pol Roger, this is currently held in bond at Vinotheque in Burton-On-Trent, where it is cellared in ideal conditions and for same day deliveries small quantities are held in our London offices in a top of the range Eurocave
