Pol Roger Brut Reserve NV - Gift Boxed
Bottles Available: 60+ × 75cl - 60+ from 19th Aug - 200+ from 19th Aug
Pol Roger was just nineteen when he founded his estate in 1849. Still a family-run enterprise, fifth generation Hubert de Billy is one of the descendants who manage the House today. With 92-hectares of vineyards supplying half of their grape requirements and illustrious premises containing immaculate facilities including pristinely polished stainless-steel tanks. Today they own 92 hectares of vineyards and its cellars in Epernay, just off the Avenue de Champagne run for 7.5 kms, 34 metres below the ground at a constant 9 Celsius.

Remarkably, a small team of less than ten complete everything in the cellar by hand and Pol Roger boast four of the region's remaining fifteen riddlers, who impressively turn over 60,000 bottles a day. Indeed, it is this style and their respect for tradition that initiated Sir Winston Churchill's lifelong attachment to Pol Roger, who famously insisted: "In defeat I need it, in victory I deserve it." Today, their prestige cuvée is named in honour of the great man.

Pol Roger Réserve NV has long been recognisable of the distinctive white foil closure, hence it is commonly referred to simply as 'White Foil'. A blend of all three grape varieties from thirty still base wines, White Foil is an often an assemblage of three or four different vintages. The Pinot Noir contributes body, depth of character and life-extending tannins and comes from the villages of the Montagne de Reims; the Chardonnay provides the lightness, elegance and finesse and is drawn from Épernay itself and the villages of the Côte des Blancs; and the Meunier supplies youthful freshness, vigour and plump character with the grapes coming from the Vallée d'Epernay. The bottle code indicates packaging date: the first digit denotes the year and the next three digits the day of that year.

The gift box design pays homage to, and unites, two of Churchill's great passions; painting and Champagne Pol Roger. Tess Costil of Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, was crowned the winner of the Winston Churchill Design Competition 2019. Churchill described his enthusiasm for painting as taking a 'joyride in a paint box'; having discovered the joy of painting at the age of 40, he remained a prolific and dedicated artist for the rest of his life. Tess's design is based on one of his most famous paintings, 'The Goldfish Pool at Chartwell'.

Tasting Note: On the nose, the champagne is dominated by green apple and brioche. On the palate there is a certain nuttiness and a hint of honey supporting the freshness of the acidity. UK stock receives an additional 6 months post-disgorgement aging so it is ready to drink upon release but cellaring for a few years will reveal greater depths. Brut Réserve is the perfect apéritif champagne, never released until at least three years old.
Pol Roger was just nineteen when he founded his eponymous estate in 1849. Still a family-run enterprise, fifth generation Hubert de Billy is one of the descendants who manage the House today, ensuring they remain fiercely independent and unrivalled in their reputation for quality. With 89-hectares of vineyards supplying half of their grape requirements and illustrious premises containing immaculate facilities including pristinely polished stainless-steel tanks that reflect shiny tiles and snow-white surfaces, their success is a consequence of incredibly personal attention to detail. In 1955 the family started acquiring vineyards, today they own 92 hectares. Their own grapes are just over 50% of their needs, requiring them to work with many growers from many villages. Its cellars in Epernay are just off the Avenue de Champagne run for 7.5 kms, 34 metres below the ground at a constant 9 Celsius.

Remarkably, a small team of less than ten complete everything in the cellar by hand and Pol Roger boast four of the region's remaining fifteen riddlers, who impressively turn over 60,000 bottles a day. The House use no oak in the winemaking process and their double cold-settling of the grape juice contributes to the pure-fruity style of their champagnes. Indeed, it is this style and their respect for tradition that initiated Sir Winston Churchill's lifelong attachment to Pol Roger, who famously insisted: "In defeat I need it, in victory I deserve it." Today, their prestige cuvée is named in honour of the great man.

Cellar Master: Damien Cambres - March 2018 to present
Winery Location: Épernay | Champagne, France
Champagne Region: Côte des Blancs
Annual Production (bottles): 1,800,000

Chef de Cave History at Champagne Pol Roger:

Damien Cambres - March 2018 to present - Damien Cambres took over as Cellar Master on Monday April 2nd 2018, at forty-three he succeeds Dominique Petit who retires after 19 years at Champagne Pol Roger. Damien was born in Châlons-en-Champagne and completed the national diploma in oenology. Before joining Pol Roger he spent 20 years in champagnes co-operative business, 1997 to 2012, with Nicolas Feuillatte, before joining Gouttes d’Or Union as production manager then general manager, until 2017 when he joined Pol Roger as Director of Production in April 2017. For the next 12 months he worked with his predecessor Dominique Petit understanding the know-how and philosophy of the family-owned company.

Dominique Petit - Spring 1999 & retired in March 2018 Dominique studied oenology for seven years; Beaune Wine College in 1970 to 1971, Wine College of Avize from 1971 to 1973 and finally at the Faculty of Science in Reims from 1973 to 1977. His first vintage of his professional career was 1979, he comments "Maturity was spectacular with a purity that was extraordinarily beautiful. The wines were all without exception wonderful, and the few remaining examples in the cellars are still the same." This first role was at Champagne Krug, where he stayed for 20 years, part of the winemaking team and becoming Director of Production. Much of early years with Champagne Pol Roger, from 2001 to 2013 he oversaw a major refurbishment of the winery, enlarging the cellar space for settling, blending and vinification. In addition he introduced smaller tanks from 20 hl to 160 h/l , allowing him to keep smaller parcels of the best wines separate for the vintage and Churchill cuvée.

James Coffinet - 1985 to Spring 1999 - Recruited by Christian de Billy from Billecart-Salmon where he was Cellar Master. With Christian's oversight, James introduced double débourbage, longer periods of cold settling the must, twice for between 24-48 hours at 6 Celsius followed by a cooler fermentation. These were practices borrowed from the brewing industry and used at Champagne Billecart-Salmon where he previously worked. Coffinet was considered one of the best winemakers of his generation.

William Kelley
“The current release of Pol Roger's NV Brut Réserve is quite dramatic, bursting with aromas of mandarin oil, honeycomb, elderflower, fresh bread and musky peach. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's generous and textural, with a rich core of fruit, lively acids and a pillowy mousse.”

Essi Avellan MW
“Pale lemon colour. Fresh and bright, the nose shows white flowers, yellow apple, quince, tangerine and apricot tart. A subtle spicy note backs the fruit up. It's perky and energetic on the fleshy yet structured palate, a balanced blend of the three key Champagne varieties from some 30 crus. There is fruity muscle to this wine, which rewards mid-term cellaring. Dosage 8g/l”

“Cooked apple, biscuit, savoury and long. Delicious salted-bread aftertaste. The absolute prototype of champagne, and I appreciate the generous dosage.”

“Light greenish yellow, silver reflections, lively mousse. White fruit underlaid with biscuit, fresh farm apple, lemony nuances, a hint of peach and herbs. Full-bodied on the palate, ripe, discreet sweet fruit gives volume, pleasant acidity on the finish, will benefit from a few years of bottle ageing.”

Kristaps Karklins
“The latest rendition of Pol Roger’s NV Brut Réserve is based on the 2021 vintage and includes 30% reserve wines from the 2020, 2019 and 2018 vintages. Disgorged in October 2024 with a dosage of eight grams per liter, the wine bursts from the glass with an expressive bouquet of crisp pear, orange zest, ripe peach and delicate pastry notes. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with a vibrant core of fruit and admirable balance, despite what might sound like a relatively generous dosage. It is infused with bright acidity and culminates in a persistent, saline finish. Composed in equal parts of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, this cuvée is immediately appealing upon release yet possesses the structure to reward several years of cellaring, revealing the charm of a finely matured Champagne.”

“I LOVE this champagne every time I have the pleasure of it passing my lips! But the pleasure starts long before actually tasting it when savouring the gorgeous fruity and exciting nose - I never waste this moment and always linger in the joy of smelling what I am about to enjoy. Each bottle is an investment in pleasure and enjoying every single sip of loveliness. Value for money is sky high on this one and Pol Roger Brut Reserve NV gives the best 'bang for your buck' than any drink I know! I'd rate this with 50 stars if I could. ”

“I love the Pol Roger white top, and it makes a super gift in the box inspired by Winston Churchill’s iconic Goldfish painting”
