Description & Technical Information
-
Pol Roger Brut Vintage is produced in limited quantities using the traditional House blend from twenty Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Second fermentation takes place in the coolest Pol Roger cellars, thirty-three metres below ground level at temperatures of just 9°C, some 2-3°C cooler than the cellars of other producers. The cooler cellars slow down bottle fermentation, producing a champagne with finer bubbles, a characteristic for which these small production releases of Pol Roger are known for. The final blend is aged for nine years in the cellars before disgorgment and release.

Weather: The 1990 vintage experienced some frost damage early in the year, particularly during April. However, a superb summer helped the grapes thrive in their growth. Due to the long days and summer sun combined with cool nights, the grapes had excellent alcohol and acidity levels. The crop was the third largest on record and 1990 produced the ripest wines since 1959. A fantastic vintage.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand & Premier Cru
Grape Varieties: 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay
Ageing: 9 years on the lees
Dosage: 6-8 g/l
Drink: Now to 2024

Tasting Note: The magnum format has allowed this champagne to age exceptionally, with the fruit character still bright yet intense. This is a deep golden colour and the aromas of orchard fruits and hints of spice lead to a palate bursting with fresh acidity and apples. The finish is long, creamy and lingering. This is a full-bodied champagne, with plenty more ageing left in it.

“Subtle soft white fruit nose with beautiful underlying toastiness. Underneath the softness and charm lies a lot of hidden power. Pure and prickly palate full of energy. Lovely succulent length, juicy and linear. Charming instantly but comes with potential. ”

“Bright, lightly leesy aromas of fresh apples, minerals and spices. Fresh, spicy and intensely flavored, but quite austere, almost metallic and not yet demonstrating much personality. But firm, bright and fresh, finishing with good grip. This wine came with an excellent reputation, but I preferred both Pol Roger Rose and Blanc de Chardonnay from this superb vintage.”

To celebrate the release of Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2008, we put it to the test in a blind vertical tasting of the last four vintages of Pol: 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. We also threw in the non-vintage for good measure.
