Description & Technical Information
-
Pol Roger Brut Vintage is produced in limited quantities using the traditional House blend from twenty Grand and Premier Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Second fermentation takes place in the coolest Pol Roger cellars, thirty-three metres below ground level at temperatures of just 9°C, some 2-3°C cooler than the cellars of other producers. The cooler cellars slow down bottle fermentation, producing a champagne with finer bubbles, a characteristic for which these small production releases of Pol Roger are known for. The final blend is aged for eight years in the cellars before disgorgment and release.

Weather: The 2004 vintage saw an initial winter of mild temperatures with intermittent storms and hail. The spring and summer months were hot and sunny and the sugar levels late in September produced good quality fruits, especially for the Pinot Noir grapes. A huge harvest in general for the region. Overall many experts believe that 2004 is one of the greatest vintages of the last two decades.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand & Premier Cru
Grape Varieties: 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay
Ageing: 8 years on the lees
Disgorged: Summer 2014
Dosage: 8 g/l
Drink: Now to 2026

Tasting Note: A classic Pol Roger vintage without the theatrics of 2002, this displays an attractive pale straw colour. Excellent freshness and persistence on the palate, with notes of acacia honey and citrus underpinned by a fine thread of acidity. The slow-motion ageing characteristic of Pol Roger's cold cellars is evident in this youthful vintage, with ample concentration and richness that will develop over the next 3-7 years.

Jancis Robinson MW
“Magnum. Disgorged January 2015. 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, 15-20% grands crus and premiers crus.
Floral nose, tight knit bead. Quite like the 2006. Fresh and tight and quite rich. Good bite.”

To celebrate the release of Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2008, we put it to the test in a blind vertical tasting of the last four vintages of Pol: 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. We also threw in the non-vintage for good measure.
