Champagne Salon Overview
+
Champagne's first, finest and rarest Blanc de Blancs, Salon is the legacy of one man who devoted his life to creating the perfect pure-Chardonnay champagne. Produced from grapes grown on the deep chalk soils of Le Mesnil, still one of Champagne’s only Grand Cru villages, the apparent simplicity of this formula belies the challenges inherent in creating a wine of Salon’s complexity. Made on average only three times per decade, Salon Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs 2002 is only the thirty-eighth vintage of Salon in history. Just 62,000 bottles of Salon were produced in 2002.

Weather: The 2002 vintage shaped up magnificently over the spring, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. Then followed a summer marked by long, sunny periods interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. The vines were in good health and the dehydration of the grape berries helped them reach new heights of ripeness. Generally considered one of the best harvests in the last twenty years.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand Cru | Le Mesnil-sur-Oger
Grape Varieties: 100% Chardonnay
Ageing: 10 years on the lees
Disgorged: June 2014
Dosage: 7 g/l
Drink: 2017-2030

Tasting Note: A mellow golden colour with a delicate yet lively nose. On the palate flavours of honeyed orange and candied citrus fruits excite. This has a beautiful mouth-feel which is simultaneously rich and restrained. The complexity of the aromas and flavours are almost precision-engineered and the flavours linger long. One of the very best champagnes ever made.

Salon Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs 2002 does not have an individual branded gift box and will be delivered in our own TFB gift box.

“Disgorged June 2014. RS 7 g/l. Supplied by Salon's UK agent, Corney & Barrow.
Tasted blind. Very pale. Seems dense, and layered, with some real intensity. Racy. Very appetising. But slightly astringent on the end. Bottle variation. Not ‘ravishing’, as promised by the Salon literature.”

“Rich, lightly honeyed, pure and with spiced yeasty complexity. Fine notes of clementine unfold in the glass. Firm and almost savoury on the palate. Very fine texture and a sour-fresh finish that is wonderfully long. Though at the moment the Delamotte 2007 is offering more generous pleasure. (JH)”

“Another highlight in this vertical, the 2002 Salon is also fascinating to taste after the 2004. Rich, opulent and intense, yet also very classic in the Salon house style, the 2002 possesses superb persistence and depth. The radiant vintage has softened the contours and given the wine fabulous depth to match its decidedly powerful personality. At the same time, the 2002 remains quite youthful. Next to the brighter and more finessed 2004, the 2002 offers more of a baritone-inflected expression of Chardonnay.”

“There was a long wait well worthwhile for 2002 Salon. Even if this vintage still is ‘bottled potential’, it starts to show some of its true, magnificent colours. Super rich nose with sweet fruitiness, even hints of botrytised fruit and fine, spicy white pepper and mineral flity tones. But there is also a quaffing character there, seducing with its smooth generosity and turboboosted weightless density. A classic keeper.”

“Light yellow. Intensely perfumed aromas of tangerine, poached pear, white flowers and candied ginger, with a vibrant mineral overtone. Velvety and seamless on the palate, offering densely packed orchard and citrus fruit flavors that gain spiciness and vivacity with air. Shows superb depth and finishes long, taut and minerally, with clinging pear and honeysuckle qualities. I have no doubt that this is a Champagne for the long haul; in fact, it really demands aging.”

“The 35th and most recent vintage of Salon since the house was founded in 1905 is memorable and magnificent. Made only from Chardonnay grown in the Grand Cru village of Les Mesnil-sur-Oger, it combines intense minerality, a crisp textured core and the beginnings of maturity. The depths of this wine, with its layers of fruit and steeliness, are superb. Even after 12 years, it still needs to age further. Drink from 2018. Cellar Selections.”

“A subtle, intense champagne that shows a complex character of lilac, minerals, sliced lemon, apple and white pepper. It's full-bodied and dense but racy and agile with a lightness and freshness. It has a gloriously long finish. It changes every moment in the glass, and such clarity. It's magnificent to drink now, but shows great texture and structure for ageing. Best since 1982.”

“Ethereal, with a refined, delicate mousse and a haunting array of flavors, from the vein of chalky minerality to ripe pastry fruit to a skein of spice and richer accents of spun honey, creamed almond and fleur de sel. The fnely meshed acidity is racy and persistent, pushing the range on the long, lacy finish. Lovely.
Drink now through 2032.”

“Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Disgorged December 2012, dosage 6 g/l. Initial aroma is more creamy and open than the non-dosé but it seems to change less in the glass. More obviously generous than the non-dosé, has the same power but seems less driven. Rich, subtly yeasty and just slightly smoky/mineral. Tastes pretty dry, and dry enough for me. Very very long and beautifully balanced even though it is intensely fresh. Lovely definition and clarity and finesse and much more to come. (Corney's Adam Brett-Smith suggested Salon is a rapier whereas Krug is a broadsword.)”

“The 2002 Salon is utterly mesmerizing. I have tasted the 2002 six or seven times since its release and even during those two months or so the wine has developed quite dramatically, as some of the exuberance that was present at the outset has begun to recede, revealing the wine's intense underlying minerality. The 2002 is a huge, dense wine loaded with fruit. All of the classic Salon citrus, slate and floral notes are present, but it is the wine's superb textural richness that stands out most. Even though I have not followed my own advice, I suggest readers to plan on cellaring the 2002 for a good number of years. Because of its density and depth, I expect the 2002 will develop into a fairly exotic, voluptuous Champagne, within the context of Salon, of course. I also suggest keeping an eye out for the magnums, which are sure to disappear from the market pretty much the minute they arrive.”

“62,000 bottles and 5,000 magnums made. Salon were the only house that didn't release a 2000, according to them. This 2002 is therefore the next vintage following their 1999. The nose is beautifully open - buttercream, bakery dough with a saline and flint character too. Impeccable but very subtle fruit. This is excellence done by degrees. There's a floral quality, and a smoky, reductive edge too. Even some honey. It's only just entering its drinking window. As is often said of the very best champagnes, this is wine first and sparkling second.”
Bought directly from Corney & Barrow, the UK agent for Salon. This is currently held in bond at Vinotheque in Burton-On-Trent, where it is cellared in ideal conditions and for same day deliveries small quantities are held in our London offices in a top of the range Eurocave
