Salon Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs 2006

Per Bottle
Description & Technical Information
Champagne's first, finest and rarest Blanc de Blancs, Salon is the legacy of one man who devoted his life to creating the perfect pure-Chardonnay champagne. Produced from grapes grown on the deep chalk soils of Le Mesnil, still one of Champagne’s only Grand Cru villages, the apparent simplicity of this formula belies the challenges inherent in creating a wine of Salon’s complexity. Made on average only three times per decade, Salon Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs 2006 is only the fortieth vintage of Salon in history. Just 53,000 bottles of Salon were produced in 2006.

Weather: The 2006 vintage was a year of mixed weather. It began with a rainy spell and late spring, but with little or no frost in the vineyards. Early summer was positive, with the months of June and July creating perfect conditions for flowering. Although there were some storms in late-July, the overall health of the vines was great since the weather remained hot through to the harvest with spells of rain in August promoting even healthier grapes.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand Cru | Le Mesnil-sur-Oger
Grape Varieties: 100% Chardonnay
Ageing: 10 years on the lees
Dosage: 4 g/l
Drink: Now to 2045+

Tasting Note: A golden colour with hints of green and silver shimmers. Tiny bubbles fill the glass. On the nose lightly toasted almonds and ripe zesty fruits. The palate is a combination of hazelnuts and dried apricot with peaches and lemon hints. The long lasting palate is superb. This champagne is stunning now and given time will age superbly. As with all Salon vintages, patience will be rewarded here.

Expert Reviews
Antonio Galloni
“The 2006 Salon (Edition 2019) shows a decidedly tropical, exotic profile that is unusual for Salon. Passion fruit, mango, apricot jam and wild floral notes race across the palate as this sumptuous, radiant Salon shows off its alluring personality. Vinous, textured and flamboyantly ripe, the 2006 is one of the most hedonistic Salons in recent memory. I have had slightly fresher examples, but the style of the wine is always the same. Dosage is 5.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: January, 2019.”
Jancis Robinson MW
“Disgorged (Edition) 2019. Didier Depond: ‘the romantic vintage’. Picked from 14 September.
Pungent and racy. Very transparent and almost soft, perhaps because the wine was opened two hours earlier then re-stoppered. Fine and round. Very friendly. Floral and fine. Very long. Like the delicate brush of a feather against the cheek.”
Antonio Galloni
“The 2006 Salon is a very rich wine, almost uncharacteristically so. Deep and exotic the 2006 exudes richness in all of its dimensions, with myriad inflections of sumptuous fruit that fill out its ample, large-scaled frame. Today, the 2006 is surprisingly accessible for a young Salon, but it needs time to shed some baby fat. At times, the 2006 recalls the 2002, but it appears to have more phenolic intensity and overall structure. Even with all of its flamboyance and pure volume, the 2006 retains quite a bit of energy and freshness. I imagine it will be a fascinating, utterly compelling Champagne to follow over the next several decades.”
William Kelley
“The 2006 Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut is quite tangy and reserved by the standards of this sunny, demonstrative vintage. Offering up aromas of smoke, toasted bread, orange oil, mocha and confit lemon, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with racy acids and a concentrated, surprisingly structured mid-palate. Concluding with a long and gently empyreumatic finish, this is a fine success. This bottle was disgorged in January 2019.”

Not many champagnes are as eagerly anticipated as Salon 2008. Produced only in magnums (just 8,000 were made) and exclusively available as part of a specially designed wooden case, the ultimate rarity just got rarer. We met president Didier Depond in June to find out more.
