Champagne Taittinger Overview
+
All the grapes used in Comtes de Champagne are grown in the 100% rated Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs of Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Chouilly. Only made from Chardonnay and from vintages of exceptional quality, 5% of the wines have aged for 4 months in new oak barrels, a third of which are renewed every year. Presented in 18th century antique style bottles, this hand-crafted Champagne is aged 18 metres underground in the UNESCO status Saint Nicaise cellars in Reims, for a minimum of 8 years before being released.

The 2004 vintage saw a relatively soft and late summer with September being warm and sunny. This helped the sugar levels in the grapes which were low at the beginning of September and the final result was good quality fruit. The quantity was also excellent; this combination made it a very good year for Champagne.

A rich, enticing aroma of hazelnut with flavours of pastry, poached apple, honey and ginger in the mouth. Complex and well knit, this has a racy endurance. Comtes de Champagne 2004 reveals the full aging potential typical of the great Chardonnays from the Côte des Blancs.

“Such an epitome of elegance. Soft, gunpowder, toast and vanilla lined white fruit nose. Smooth and intense with good tension and a playful nature. Round and mouth-filling with medium length. Seems to age very slowly and gracefully.”

“100% Chardonnay (100% from grand cru vineyards). Dosage 9 g/l.
Highly aromatic with citrus and a touch of cedar but also something slightly sulphurous. There's quite a woody note on the palate with a slightly sour aftertaste. Wonder if this is in perfect condition? Excellent persistence and leaves your gums tingling.”

“A rich and enticing aroma of roasted hazelnut heralds this elegant blanc de blancs, with flavors of pastry, poached apple, crystallized honey and candied ginger riding the finely detailed mousse. This is a touch smoky, presenting a resonant minerality on the finish. Drink now through 2029.”

“Very neat, intense with notes of putty on the nose. Complex and well knit. Masses of acidity! Still quite tight. Very promising and one can certainly see a relationship with a grand cru Chablis here. Very youthful. Gentle bead. Great energy. But quite broad.”

“I am thrilled with the way the 2004 Comtes de Champagne continues to evolve in bottle. A few years ago, the 2004 was quite focused and linear, in the style of the vintage, but more recently, the wine has begun to fill out beautifully. The 2004 remains bright, with a full range of citrus, white flower and mineral nuances that dance on the palate. A brisk, saline-infused finish rounds things out beautifully in a Comtes that impresses for its crystalline purity. I expect the 2004 will always remain a bit cool next to the more opulent 2002, but it is still drop-dead gorgeous.”

“It’s fascinating to taste the 2004 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne after the 2002, something I have been able to do on a few occasions. The 2004 is all about minerality, precision and tension. It doesn’t have the sheer richness or power of the 2002, but it makes up for that with its crystalline purity and sheer energy. Bright hints of lemon oil, white flowers and crushed rocks are layered into the pointed, vibrant finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034.”
