Description & Technical Information
-
Champagne Vazart-Coquart, established in the 19th century, produce only single cru champagnes from their 11-hectare estate in Champagne's largest Grand Cru village, Chouilly. Being the Côte des Blancs, mainly Chardonnay is grown here, with just 4.5-hectares of Pinot Noir planted in the whole village. Only a handful of independent growers in the region can boast ownership of a Pinot Noir plot in Chouilly: and Vazart-Coquart are one of them. Vazart-Coquart were just the third producer to be awarded the highest level of environmental certification in 2012.
Vazart-Coquart Blanc de Blancs is an elegant blend of pure Chardonnay with a low dosage and a minimum of four years ageing on the lees. A blend of several years, the 25% reserve wines are from a perpetual reserve implemented by Jacques Vazart in 1982. Very limited quantities are produced each year, with maximum annual production at 3,000 bottles. All the grapes come from their own 11 hectare estate in Chouilly.
The current base vintage is 2015 blended with 5% of 2014, 5% of 2014 and 25% 'Solera' reserve. 'Solera' reserve began in 1982 and is renewed each year with 40% of the new harvest.

Champagne Vazart-Coquart Overview

Champagne Vazart-Coquart produce only single cru champagnes from their 11-hectare estate in Champagne's largest Grand Cru village, Chouilly.
Established in the 19th century, this independent grower has developed quickly into a respected producer. Current owner Jean-Pierre Vazart values eco-friendly winemaking and Vazart-Coquart were just the third producer to be awarded the highest level of environmental certification in 2012. His multiple vineyard sites, with many variations of soil and exposure, produce different wines for the domaine. Vinification is based on small tanks to capture this variation and only stainless-steel is used, producing a unique style of mineral delicacy and buttery, floral fruit: the signature of Chouilly.

“Jean-Pierre Vazart has 11 ha (27 acres), all of it in Chouilly on the Côte des Blancs. All of his wines are therefore Blancs de Blancs Grand Cru Chouilly. He is the third-biggest land-holder in Chouilly, although some way behind Moët and Louis Roederer! His wines are made completely in stainless steel, for ‘purity’ as he says. The estate is HVE-certified and in conversion to full organic status. This is 100% Chardonnay. Base 2014, plus 5% 2013, 5% 2012 and 25% ‘solera’ reserve begun in 1982 (by Jean-Pierre's father) and renewed each year with 40% of the new harvest. Malo done. Bottled March 2015, disgorged September 2018. Dosage 3.5 g/l. Bright lemony straw colour. Attractive hint of putty on well-integrated palate. Really creamy and beautifully balanced. None of the extremism that is sometimes to be found in Extra Brut wines. Rather difficult to spit. Really very appealing.”

“100% Chardonnay. Stainless steel. Base 2009 plus 30% reserve from the ‘solera’ begun in 1982. Bottled April 2010, disgorged December 2013, 44 months on lees. Dosage 3 g/l.
Nervy nose with a hint of putty. Firm impact on the palate but not aggressive, not aggressively dry. Wonderfully interesting for the price. Very satisfying finish.”
