Created in 1972 to celebrate the bicentenary of the House, La Grande Dame is a tribute to Madame Clicquot also known as ‘La Grande Dame de la Champagne’. Veuve Clicquot's prestige cuvée, it is an exclusive blend of eight of their historical Grand Crus and is a mineral and fresh expression of the Veuve Clicquot style. La Grande Dame Rosé 2006 was obtained with the addition of 15% red wine made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes from the village of Bouzy. The vast majority of grapes originate from Clos Colin, one of Veuve Clicquot's best lots situated in the heart of the Grand Cru village.

Weather: The 2006 vintage was a year of mixed weather. It began with a rainy spell and late spring, but with little or no frost in the vineyards. Early summer was positive, with the months of June and July creating perfect conditions for flowering. Although there were some storms in late-July, the overall health of the vines was great since the weather remained hot through to the harvest with spells of rain in August promoting even healthier grapes.

Tasting Note: On the nose subtle fragrances of strawberries and wild red fruits shine through. The palate is stunning: an abundance of fresh strawberries and raspberries combine with hints of toasted notes of ginger and honey. The finish is long and lingering with a divine combination of fruits and toasted qualities.. very smooth and full-bodied. A marvellous champagne from a truly unique vintage.

“Winter was particularly cold and long and spring was mixed, but with good conditions for budding. Flowering took place in late June, in what was unseasonably hot weather. Summer was chaotic, with conditions in August more akin to those in late autumn. Fortunately, the vines were able to draw on their reserves to produce an abundant yield of superb quality. We harvested a very fine crop between 14 and 29 September. At the very end of picking, there was some botrytis but it had no impact on the quality of the harvest and our meticulous sorting operation removed any damaged grapes. The young Pinot Noir wines were fruity and full-bodied and the young Chardonnay wines had lots of elegance and finesse. The red wines from Clos Colin in Bouzy showed excellent balance. They were rich and fleshy yet crisp. 85% white still wine (51% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay), 15% Bouzy Rouge. Dosage 8 g/l, disgorged September 2014.
Deep gold-orange. Almost coppery. Not much on the nose, a touch salty, then light red fruits and even a hint of blossom. Slightly smoky on the palate, super-dry and finely textured, supple and subtle but with good length. Tannins are elegant and present, serious and persistent and are very significant in the overall style of this wine. This has a real savoury wine-like quality, even though only 15% of the blend is red wine. (JH)”
