Description & Technical Information

Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is a House steeped in rich history that owes its success largely to one woman, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin. Madame Clicquot also invented the riddling rack on her kitchen table, an apparatus that removes the sediment from the bottle after second fermentation still used in the region today. Veuve Clicquot own a respectable 382 hectares of vineyards with an emphasis on Pinot Noir. The House maintains the largest collection of old reserve wines in Champagne, these help give Yellow Label its complexity while ensuring the high quality is maintained in the world’s second bestselling Champagne brand. In 2008 Dominique Demarville joined as Cellar Master, he “refreshed the brand” including increasing the proportion of Pinot Noir in La Grande Dame to 90%+ and with blending shifts he brought a new freshness in Yellow Label. In 2019 Didier Mariotti took over as Cellar Master.

Created in 1972 to celebrate the bicentenary of the House, La Grande Dame is a tribute to Madame Clicquot also known as ‘La Grande Dame de la Champagne’. Veuve Clicquot's prestige cuvée, it is an exclusive blend of eight of their historical Grand Crus and is a mineral and fresh expression of the Veuve Clicquot style. La Grande Dame Rosé 2008 was obtained with the addition of 14% red wine made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes from the village of Bouzy. The vast majority of grapes originate from Clos Colin, one of Veuve Clicquot's best lots situated in the heart of the Grand Cru village.

Weather: 2008 was dominated by grey, overcast skies – an exception in a decade characterized by bold, generous sunshine. Spring and summer rought the same lack of sunlight and absence of high temperatures. It was September that saved the vintage, belatedly and miraculously. Just when the harvest was getting underway (on September 15), the weather conditions were finally perfect: blue skies and prolonged north-northeasterly winds. Picking was spread out over a long period in order to benefit from this positive turn of events. The grapes were riper than anyone dared hope, and had truly outstanding balance. The vines were in perfect health.

Tasting Note: Rose gold, full-bodied and fresh, powerful aromas of red fruits are complemented by citrus notes, and finally hints of rooibos tea and fine leather. Complex, and in full harmony with the nose, this champagne is redolent of red and black fruits, dried flowers and smoke, with a long, luscious finish.

“Medium-deep salmon colour. Evolving, powerful Pinot nose with plenty of character deriving from the 14% red wine addition. A complex mélange of dark cherry, smoke, game, red apple and pastry. Round, plush and exquisitely fruity palate, slightly on the winey side but comes with fine acidic backbone and vivacity. A touch of ripe tannin on the back palate and lovely lemony succulence bringing freshness and deliciousness. ”

“Disgorged May 2017 and launched at the same time as La Grande Dame Blanc. The same blend as the white plus 14% red wine from their own vineyard – Clos Colin, between Louvois and Bouzy. South facing. 29-year-old vines.
A little bit of reduction. Deep orange Aperol colour. Tense and lively, with masses of fruit and openness. Dominique Demarville sees it as rather like a Chambolle. Good bite (‘positive bitterness’), after almost blowsy fruit. Dominique Demarville would like to launch the rosé a year after the white. Distinctive and confident – and much more approachable than the white. A bit like bitters, almost Campari. Morello cherries! More finesse than the white 2008 vintage.”

“The 2008 Brut Rosé La Grande Dame is also showing well, wafting from the glass with notes of red berries, warm spices, toasted brioche and citrus rind. Full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's a vinous, muscular wine like its white sibling, with a lively spine of acidity and delicately phenolic back-end grip.”
