Bought directly from Moet Hennessey UK Ltd, the bottles are stored in bond at London City Bond Eton Park, in ideal conditions at a constant 13°C. For same-day deliveries, small quantities are kept in our office cellar, where the temperature is maintained between 11–13°C. We source all our bottles directly from the Maison or their official UK office, eliminating the risk of poor storage. This is crucial, as champagne quality is highly sensitive to heat: temperatures above 18°C accelerate maturity significantly, which compromises quality.

Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is a House steeped in rich history that owes its success largely to one woman, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin. Madame Clicquot also invented the riddling rack on her kitchen table, an apparatus that removes the sediment from the bottle after second fermentation still used in the region today. Veuve Clicquot own a respectable 382 hectares of vineyards with an emphasis on Pinot Noir. The House maintains the largest collection of old reserve wines in Champagne, these help give Yellow Label its complexity while ensuring the high quality is maintained in the world’s second bestselling Champagne brand. In 2008 Dominique Demarville joined as Cellar Master, he “refreshed the brand” including increasing the proportion of Pinot Noir in La Grande Dame to 90%+ and with blending shifts he brought a new freshness in Yellow Label. In 2019 Didier Mariotti took over as Cellar Master.
A predominance of Pinot Noir provides the structure that is so typically Clicquot, while a touch of Meunier rounds out the blend and Chardonnay adds the elegance and finesse essential in a perfectly balanced wine. Grapes from as many as 50 to 60 different Crus go into the blending of Yellow Label. Traditionally, the proportion of each grape variety used is 50 to 55% Pinot Noir, 28 to 33% Chardonnay and 15 to 20% Meunier. The reserve wine content of each new release varies depending on the quality of the latest vintage. Chef de Caves Demarville uses as much as 25 to 40% reserve wines to ensure the continuity of the House style.

Tasting Note: This has a fine bead of bubbles present with a golden yellow colour. On the nose: white fruits and nicely balanced citrus notes. On the palate: the Pinot Noir dominance shines through but is balanced perfectly by the delicate Chardonnay. Ripe fruits and some hints of brioche on the finish. A great non-vintage.

Privileged to a respectable 382-hectare estate with facilities to envy, Veuve Clicquot today run an immense operation in Reims. The House style is voluptuous and deeply fruity with a preference for Pinot Noir dominance. An unusually large proportion of old reserve wines give their non-vintage champagne nuances and depth not found elsewhere and their vintage expressions are deliciously ageing classics.

“Magnum: Medium deep lemon colour. Soft, youthful, super fruity nose with vanilla and red apple. Lovely toasty overtone on the sweetly fruity nose of sulphitic complexity. Fresh, fluffy palate, rounded. Sweet, gentle soft finish with fine carry. Very young still with emerging complexity.”

“Magnum, base 2008 (current magnums based on 2012). QR code on back labels. (This is 85% of production, and if you include rosé, which is based on the same blend, it would be 92%!) Was launched in 2015. Disgorged early 2012; (Chef de Cave Dominique Demarville looks at the cork) probably the original disgorgement. Dosage 10 g/l. 29% reserve wines, lower than some vintages (usually 40–45%), comprising 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004 and a touch of 1993. 50% Pinot Noir, 29.5% Chardonnay, 20.5% Pinot Meunier. Hint of coconut. Some real sweetness and charm, but the magnum effect is very important. In bottle it’s unlikely to taste nearly as good. Easy to like and some real richness along with tension; the candied citrus note desired is perceptible. Just a little metallic and dry on the end. Is the fruit drying out a little?”

“The Veuve Clicquot style is based on fruity, brioche notes on the nose, with structure and roundness on the palate. Mature reserve wines are key to the character of this Pinot Noir-dominant wine. Pale lemon colour. The softly fragrant, rather youthful nose offers plenty of sweet fruity depth: orchard fruits, sweet lemon, strawberry, meadow flowers and a yeasty whiff. A similar soft, plush fruitiness continues on the rounded palate, which comes across a little sweet, adding an easiness to the wine. Over time in the glass, the aromatics start to open up, with more complexity surfacing. A friendly, quality wine, with delicious fruitiness and lovely soft, textural mellowness. This can be aged. Dosage 10g/l”

“(roughly 50% pinot noir, 30% chardonnay and 20% pinot meunier; Lot 14009913): Light gold. Musky orchard fruits and dried fig on the mineral-accented nose. Fleshy and broad on the palate, offering smoky pear and nectarine flavors and a hint of honey. Finishes on a gently spicy note, with very good cling and a touch of bitter lemon pith. Things have definitely begun to turn around for this bottling, which had been lagging behind the winery's vintage offerings for some time.”
Veuve Clicquot have announced that Didier Mariotti, currently chief winemaker at G.H. Mumm, will be joining the house next month and will take over as chef de cave in January 2020.
An insightful vins clairs tasting with Dominique Demarville, Veuve Clicquot's eminent Chef de Cave, painted a clear picture of the 2018 vintage. Fresh, ripe and mature, with plenty of ageing potential, the base wines at Clicquot were either exceptional or good... none of them were bad.
We tasted the 2017 vins clairs at Veuve Clicquot with Chief Winemaker Gaëlle Goossens, who described it as "a difficult year, but good for Chardonnay". We also discussed her thoughts on innovating winemaking by bridging the gap between oenology and viticulture.
To commemorate the 200th anniversary since Madame Clicquot invented blended rosé champagne, Veuve Clicquot revealed the first ever Jeroboam of Rosé NV during a celebratory dinner at Manoir de Verzy and shared the secrets of their red winemaking expertise at a tasting in London.
