Vilmart & Cie Grande Reserve NV

-
Vilmart & Cie is a grower champagne and family home that originated in 1890 by Désiré Vilmart and ever since, sons and sons-in-law have followed, always with this love of the profession, allowing this small domain to become what it is today in the heart of the Montagne de Reims a few kilometres south of Reims in the village Rilly la Montagne. Laurent Champs, 5th generation family member and Chef de Cave of Vilmart is one of Champagne’s unsung heroes, wine critic Tom Stevenson described Vilmart as “the greatest grower Champagne I know.” There are 11 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards in Rilly-la-Montagne which are planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The oldest vines are reserved for the Coeur de Cuvée and Blanc de Blancs champagnes. They have been farming biodynamically since 1989 and today are certified Viticulture Durable, Ampélos, and Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) meaning farming is free of synthetic chemicals. The fermentations are entirely in oak, giving them a richness and complexity that really builds texture an unmistakably Vilmart character.

Another characteristic of Vilmart champagnes is the absence of malolactic fermentation. This preserves freshness, tautness and subtlety, as well as the pronounced identity of the aromas. After 10 months of vinification and resting on the lees in wooden barrels, the wines are bottled and left to age in the estate’s chalk cellars: three to four years for non-vintage champagnes, and five to eight years for vintages.

Tasting Note: Opening up on the nose with a rich bouquet of pastries, notes of frangipane and honeysuckle, with attractive aromas of pepper mint flagrance. On the palate, you can feel a fresh and a sharp attack of candied fruits. It reveals a beautiful balance between the richness and the tension with a complex structure. The bitterness of the citrus fruits is perfectly integrated with further flavours of pastries which remain present throughout the long, fine finish.

Antonio Galloni
“The NV Brut Grand Réserve (2023 base) is a terrific introduction to the range. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers, vanillin and a gentle touch of reduction grace this very pretty, expressive Champagne. This release is based on 2023, with 50% reserve wines from 2022 and 2021. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 2025.”

“The 2020 harvest makes up half of the blend, with the rest coming from 2019 and 2018 reserves. Having spent ten months in large oak casks, the overall impression is brightly fruity with fine restraint. The complex nose shows perfectly ripe fruit lined with menthol, liquorice and toasty-reductive whiffs. The palate comes with a distinct note of minerality and tension. Pristinely crafted and precise, this is an exceptionally fine starting point to the range. ”

“Disgorged in June 2019, Vilmart's latest NV Brut Premier Cru Grande Réserve is showing beautifully, bursting with aromas of pear, wheat toast, yeast extract and confit citrus. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, it's fleshy and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit, tangy acids and a pillowy mousse. While it's already showing well it will also age with grace. Derived from the 2017 vintage and complemented by reserve wines from 2015 and 2016, it was disgorged with nine grams per liter dosage.”

“A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, the latest rendition of Vilmart's NV Brut Premier Cru Grande Réserve reveals a pure, delicate bouquet of pear, white flowers, confit citrus and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, pure, precise and seamless, it has a fleshy core of fruit, bright acids and a crystalline texture that paves the way to a long, mouthwatering and ethereal finish. Based on the 2021 vintage complemented with 2020 and 2019, it includes 50% vins de réserve and was vinified and matured for 10 months.”
