This is an opportunity to taste six different vintage 2008's at your house or at a location of your choosing with an option to be tutored through the tasting. Nick our founder presents most of these tastings.
Initially a difficult, damp year with widespread mildew; drier conditions in August and a fine, warm September proved many producers’ saving grace. Classically-styled wines with fresh acidity balanced by sound ripeness achieved by a long and slow ripening. Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2008 shows the prowess of this harvest. The next outstanding vintage to follow 2002 and 1996 - incredible!
Included in this collection:
Bruno Paillard: After eight years ageing on the lees and twelve months post-disgorgement, this is a champagne to watch for the future. A bright yellow golden hue with a fine bead of bubbles. The nose is very generous with aromas of cherries and hints of red fruits and citrus. The mid-palate develops to continue the red fruit and citrus theme with an abundance of wild strawberries and lemon leading to a long-lasting finish.
Palmer & Co: Consisting exclusively of Grand and Premier Crus from the Montagne de Reims area. A bright yellow colour with aromas of ripe citrus and peaches. There is an underlying nuttiness that is evident on the palate. A vibrant and acidic mouth-feel is balanced with ripe fruits and a slightly creamy texture. The layers of complexity last throughout the long lingering finish. A great example of this fantastic vintage.
Louis Roederer: Thirty percent of the wine is matured in oak casks and Brut Vintage is matured for at least four years in the cellars and rested for six months after disgorgement to attain optimal maturity Golden in colour, Louis Roederer Brut Vintage 2008 has a bouquet characteristic of the Pinot Noir grapes from Verzenay and Verzy. Packed with ripe fruits, the finish is dry, rich and complex. Still so young, it has an abundance of fruit and freshness that promise serious ageing potential. The 2008 vintage is an intense and lively champagne, embodying the fruitiness and power of this unique harvest..
Pol Roger: Aged in Pol Roger's cellars, thirty-three metres below ground level at temperatures of just 9°C, some 2-3°C cooler than the cellars of other producers. On the nose, this vintage is focused with hints of spice. On the palate, slight toasted notes give way to a rounded depth of delicious fruits with perfect acidity. A long finish of apples and a lovely creamy texture. From a vintage that has been compared to the exceptional 2002, given time this will be even more rewarding.
Taittinger: A blend of juice exclusively from the first pressing of the grapes and is aged for four years in the cellars, allowing the aromas to mature slowly and the length and complexity of the wine to develop. On the nose yeasty bread aromas combine with an abundance of ripe fruits. The palate is full of lemon and mandarin hints with a this freshness that continues throughout to the finish, lingering long with complex flavours.
Vazart Coquart Special Club: Aged for 6-7 years on cork (rather than crown cap). Production of Blanc de Blancs Special Club is limited to just 20,000 bottles per year. As one of the most senior members of the famous 'Club Trésors' (Special Cub) A champagne with delicate flavours of citrus fruits that combine with a smooth mousse texture to produce a rounded mid-palate. The finish is lingering and long. From such an incredible vintage, this 2008 will be certain to reward in the future but due to the elegance of the harvest is already a very bold champagne.
