Description & Technical Information
Hambledon is England's oldest commercial vineyard, located on the chalk soils of the South Downs in Hampshire. Originally established by Major General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones in 1952, the first harvest was produced in 1961 with advice from friends at Champagne House Pol Roger. Ian Kellett then purchased Hambledon in 1999 and shortly afterwards, extensive research revealed that sparkling wines were the future. Ian responded by planting a 10-acre 'test bed' of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier to assess which of the twenty-seven different combinations of vine clones and rootstocks gave the best results.

Hambledon Classic Cuvée is a unique assemblage of 80% wines from 2016 and 20% tank aged reserve wines. The grapes used were first pre-selected and handpicked from the estate before a second selection took place in the winery prior to pressing, ensuring only the most mature grapes went into the fermentation vats. A small percentage 6% of the wines were fermented in specially selected French oak barrels to add complexity and structure.

Weather in 2016: Cool start and mixed weather at flowering meant smaller than average yields. Long growing season with beautiful ripening. Intensified fruit flavours balanced with near perfect sugar and acidity levels.

Expert Reviews
Jancis Robinson MW
“Tasted blind. Some savour on the nose and pretty frothy on the palate. Quite a bit of green-apple flavour. Clean enough but not very charming. Young. Bone-dry finish. ”
Neal Martin
“The NV Classic Cuvée comes from chalky slopes on the evocatively named Windmill Down and comes mainly from the 2016 harvest, augmented by reserve wines, and bottled in June 2017 after a minimum of 35 months on the lees. The dosage is 4.5g/L. The voluminous bouquet displays scents of Braeburn apples, baking bread, light melon and shale-like aromas that are very harmonious and well defined. The palate is fresh with a sharp citric peel note on the entry that enlivens the senses. Taut and steelier than expected, this is a vibrant and tensile Brut whose salinity begs for some seafood to accompany it. Excellent. ”
Jamie Goode
“Tasted blind I reckoned this was a fine Blanc de Blancs – either a grower Champagne or English! Very fine, bright and lemony with lovely acidity. Pure and refined with amazing clean, sharp lines. Very fine, this is rapidly becoming an English classic.”
Tim Aktin MW
“It's chalky and dry, with subtle bubbles, hints of fresh pastry and citrus and a tapering finish: elegant, refined and understated.”
