Description & Technical Information
Since planting their first vines in 1988, Nyetimber have grown to become one of the leading names in the English sparkling wine industry. Nyetimber were the first English producer to create sparkling wine from the holy trinity of grape varieties found in Champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. They create all their sparkling wines solely from grapes grown on their estate, which now spans over 170-hectares in the South Downs.

Nyetimber's Tillington vineyard is located in the middle of the South Downs National Park, on the narrow greensand strip formed during the Cretaceous Period. The geology is of prime importance here since it has determined the characteristics of the shallow soil above - excellent underlying drainage, low natural fertility - and influences the development of the vine roots. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines grow on a south-facing slope, ranging between a 5% and 10% incline to best capture the sunlight.

Weather in 2014: A dream year for UK vineyards with little frost, very good flowering weather, a cool wet August, but warm September and October. Most growers had very good crops with excellent sugars and acids. Still wines very good and sparklers up to the high quality of 2009. Total harvest 6.32 m bottles off 1,506 hectares.

Tasting Note: A light gold complexion with very fine bubbles. On the nose, alluring aromas of wild strawberry and a delicate floral bouquet lead into richer notes of pastry and praline. The palate is generous yet refined, with ripe red apple and apricot complemented by undertones of fresh citrus. Opulent fruit and complex almond characters persist in a long and nuanced finish.

“After an initial whiff of reduction dissipates, there are notes of freshly cut green and red apple and a touch of sea breeze. More air reveals freshly cut red apple flesh. The palate comes in with a kind of rounded energy, with fruity élan that is reminiscent of ripe, red apple. The mousse is fine and creamy, the body is generous yet svelte, and there is a most lovely edge of pith that almost destines this for the table. It is the subtle apple-scented creaminess on the salty, dry finish that is utterly disarming. Impeccable balance.”

“Sourced from the estate’s own Tillington vineyard in West Sussex the single vineyard sparkling wine is only produced in the best years. This is the fourth release after 2009, 2010 and 2013. Pale gold with a pinkish hue. Passionate and floral on the nose, with toasty acacia blossom, fresh raspberry and red apple notes. Honeyed on the palate with great depth of red apple, honeysuckle and white pepper seasoned citrus. The textured, buttery mousse unravels a tight core of salinity and vivid acidity. The savoury lime peel bitterness on the finish is cleansing and salivating. Riddled in September 2019 and disgorged a year later.”

“Really meaty-yet-bracing nose opens out to more richness of a brioche-like sort. The acidity is so high that it tastes absolutely bone dry although there is probably quite a bit of dosage to judge from the tech spec for the 2013. Good definition – no mistaking this for champagne! Good, clean, long finish. Still youthful.”
