“Tasted blind. NHB! Surprisingly rich, tropical nose for an English Chardonnay! Mangoes and even a touch of caramel. Gorgeously ripe, bold, curved, a sweep of flavour. Absolutely stunning. Reverberating like harp strings, lime-tingling acidity, tense inner structure but great generosity and sweep of fruit. Tasted a few days later, blind, again, but this time next to a 2017 Montagny premier cru ringer, it was not remotely outshone. Yes, it didn't seem quite as rich – my notes were 'Smoked limes. Tense, bitter walnuts. Fennel seeds and cracked coriander seeds. Grapefruit. Almost like mustard leaves! Real bite. Spiky. Salty. But there is proper fruit underneath the lashings of acidity and spike.' I went back to this over and over, for two weeks, and every time, it delivered.”
“Tasted blind. Very complete and delicate while not being too demanding in terms of dryness and acidity. Very flirtatious and floral. A very pretty wine. Not bone dry but featherweight and alluring. ”

“Golden Delicious apple, creaminess and freshly baked brioche unite into a nose that promises buffered freshness. The palate is rounded, adds subtle Mirabelle plum to the apple notes and frames them with rounded hints of lemon oil. The mousse is fine and silky; the fruit is rounded, ripe and pure. The freshness is countered with billowy, brioche richness that coalesces into purest creaminess. The finish is long, still fruit-driven and dry.”
“Tasted blind. Hint of putty on the nose. Very beautiful texture. Creamy without being heavy. Great balance of fruit and acid. Crisp, clean and appetising.”
“So good! This walks the holy-grail tightrope for sparkling wines: autolysis, acidity, fruit, sweetness. This has a flair-flare of smoke and apple blossom on the nose, toasted (to almost burnt) brioche and crispy breadcrumbs, pan-roasted chopped hazelnuts, grapefruit, nectarine. Such clear-cut, ripe, diamond-bright fruit! We watched Paloma Faith live in concert on the weekend, watching her explosive energy and quirky personality as she cut that stage up with her insane dancing and prancing and her smoky-lazy-pewter-scratched-yuzu voice, and it pretty much sums this wine up.”

“Estate fruit from Ditchling, East Sussex. 2019 base with 2018 reserve wines. 45%. Chardonnay 45% Pinot Noir, 10% Meunier. 30% oak fermented. This has been carefully pitched, with a pleasingly fudgy, slightly oxidative dried and russet apple warmth at first, livened up with some lime and meadow flower notes. Some interesting complexity too, a spot of tangy strawberry fruit and savoury, chestnut-like notes with time in the glass, all framed with measured acidity. Stylish.
”
“Deep, bright orange-pink. Masses of strawberries on the nose but this is one of the most unusual English pink fizzes I have ever tasted! This is an explosion of blood orange and morello cherries and pomegranate with a lashing of sumac and sweet-hot paprika. This tastes as if it should carry a label saying, Made In Morocco. Just gorgeous. Crazy outgoing, exuberant, cartwheeling flavour. Full of fireworks and joy. This is street dancing! A flash mob in a bottle! ”

“Estate fruit from Ditchling, East Sussex. Co-macerated 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Pinot Meunier, split between two old burgundy barrels and one tank. A deep, highly expressive ripe strawberry and cherry tart opening, counter-balanced with some rosehip grip and sweet, toasted almond oak characters. Some complexity here, with some tarter redcurrant on one side, and some yogurty, creamy detail on the other. Bold stuff, bound to capture some attention.”
“Tasted blind. Some savour on the nose and pretty frothy on the palate. Quite a bit of green-apple flavour. Clean enough but not very charming. Young. Bone-dry finish. ”

“The NV Classic Cuvée comes from chalky slopes on the evocatively named Windmill Down and comes mainly from the 2016 harvest, augmented by reserve wines, and bottled in June 2017 after a minimum of 35 months on the lees. The dosage is 4.5g/L. The voluminous bouquet displays scents of Braeburn apples, baking bread, light melon and shale-like aromas that are very harmonious and well defined. The palate is fresh with a sharp citric peel note on the entry that enlivens the senses. Taut and steelier than expected, this is a vibrant and tensile Brut whose salinity begs for some seafood to accompany it. Excellent. ”

“Tasted blind I reckoned this was a fine Blanc de Blancs – either a grower Champagne or English! Very fine, bright and lemony with lovely acidity. Pure and refined with amazing clean, sharp lines. Very fine, this is rapidly becoming an English classic.”

“It's chalky and dry, with subtle bubbles, hints of fresh pastry and citrus and a tapering finish: elegant, refined and understated.”
“The honey, seashells, orange-blossom and saffron-cake nose on this wine is so captivating. I almost forgot to taste it. The bubbles are fine, focused, but give the wine an ethereal life. The acidity is wired down a centre tensile line, at the same time radiating out, linear turning helical, giving the wine a structure that is both orthogonal and fluid. Laminae of orange, citrus flowers, apple sherbet, chalk dust, cobnuts. High-stepping with lively, graceful, well-choreographed energy. I'm convinced this is Harrow & Hope's best wine yet.”

“Very smoky nose. Lots of pure citrus. Lime peel and racy. Very appetising.”
“Disgorged April 2022. All Pinot Noir. Released October 2022. Massively more difficult to make than Chardonnay apparently because it's sensitive to oxidation and the wine is potentially heavy. 2015 was the first one winemaker Henry Laithwaite was proud of.
Broad and a little astringent. Big and beefy. Bit of a bruiser. ”
“Top parcel of Chardonnay clone 95 on their thinnest soils. Fermented in cask and aged for four months before being blended and spending 36 months on lees. Dosage just 5 g/l in this ripe year. Served in my glass for fullest expression.
Greenish straw. Broad and more oak influence than tartness, though the finish is bone dry. Saline and complex. Excellent in my glass! This would be good with oysters.
Drink 2022–2028”
“From a single parcel of Pinot Noir, 870 clone. This is their only Blanc de Noirs and apparently this style works better in cooler vintages. No oak. Very small quantity produced. To be released late 2022.
This could actually be sold as a (very pale) rosé. Fairly rich nose. Really mouth-filling. Round and orangey and super-clean. Complete. Very much a gastro-wine. Just lovely already and reaches every nook and cranny on the palate.
Drink 2022– 2026”
“Very late (third?) pick of the ripest grapes from across the estate: 65% Pinot Noir clones 115 and 870 from their most distant plot and 35% Chardonnay, partially from what they call the amphitheatre. Much cooler year, but it was dry so they could wait to pick until the very end of October. Full malo.
Much more recognisably champagne-like than the Preambles. Really sophisticated. Good grip on the palate and a dry but not drying finish. Long. Good mousse. Much more approachable than the Preamble 2016!
Drink 2022–2028”
“60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. They make a base red from deepest, darkest Pinot and make a 4–5% addition to the blend. This cuvée is jetted at disgorgement after 18 months on lees.
Bright strawberry colour. Bright, breezy nose with lots of fruit. Mouth-filling and bursting with strawberry fruit. Long.

“46% Chardonnay, 43% Pinot Noir, 11% Pinot Meunier. Six years' ageing on lees. Dosage 9 g/l. Disgorged July 2016. Mytik Diam technological cork.
Tasted blind. Tiny bead. Some caramel on the nose. Rather loosely textured with some green-apple character. The wine with the highest apparent acid level – which may well be a clue as to its origins. Sweet and sour, this improved in the glass.

“At first taut and closed, the wine opened up beautifully, revealing a nose of sablé biscuit, sea breeze and a touch of lemon freshness. The creamy but slender body hints at a wonderful depth that opened to suggestions of honey, earth and lemon zest.
The wine is lovely now with a remarkable texture but certainly has the substance to develop. It benefits immensely from its post-disgorgement age.”

“It has an alluring colour of smoky, dusky pink. Its scented, lifted nose of pure redcurrant is arresting. The palate is slender, sleek and even a little crunchy – but aligned to the Nyetimber creaminess and fine mousse. Crisp, red apple and purest, tart redcurrant fruit shine. This is lovely now but will evolve. While both wines are great achievements, it is the rosé that proves the absolute and eminent suitability of Pinot Noir for this climate. Its fruit is brilliant and clear-cut with an aromatic hinterland and depth well worth exploring.”

“This smells like an autumn apple festival! Gloriously appley. And such purity! A wine that is not relying on lees ageing to give it depth or flavour or richness – it's all there in this incredible fruit. It fills the mouth, a trumpet concerto of silver and gold notes, while the acidity feels like the spine-tingling vibrations of harp strings, thrumming up and down – I can feel this wine like a thread-fine electric current under my skin and through my bones. Translucent white spring florals dancing weightlessly through prismic citrus; lime, yuzu, grapefruit peel. Then, right at the end, a lick of cold salted butter, a dab of cumin and coriander spice. Outstanding.”

“The subtle nose opens with hints of wet chalk and ripe Amalfi lemon. That wonderfully ripe, brisk, lemon ripeness also pervades the palate where the fine mousse highlights the chalky depth of the wine, its rounded fruit and a textural quality that seems to come with a hint of dried corn husk. This strikes a lovely balance that makes most of England’s briskness and Nyetimber’s famed sense of balance. There is depth and length and much elegance.”

“The 2014 Blanc de Blancs was bottled in March 2015 and disgorged in March 2020 and is due to hit the market in 2021. There is a touch more red fruit here, hints of white strawberries joining the defined honeysuckle and yellow plum scents. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, and quite linear, as a Blanc de Blancs should be, with a little more salinity coming through on the pear and greengage finish compared to the 2013. ”
“After an initial whiff of reduction dissipates, there are notes of freshly cut green and red apple and a touch of sea breeze. More air reveals freshly cut red apple flesh. The palate comes in with a kind of rounded energy, with fruity élan that is reminiscent of ripe, red apple. The mousse is fine and creamy, the body is generous yet svelte, and there is a most lovely edge of pith that almost destines this for the table. It is the subtle apple-scented creaminess on the salty, dry finish that is utterly disarming. Impeccable balance.”

“Sourced from the estate’s own Tillington vineyard in West Sussex the single vineyard sparkling wine is only produced in the best years. This is the fourth release after 2009, 2010 and 2013. Pale gold with a pinkish hue. Passionate and floral on the nose, with toasty acacia blossom, fresh raspberry and red apple notes. Honeyed on the palate with great depth of red apple, honeysuckle and white pepper seasoned citrus. The textured, buttery mousse unravels a tight core of salinity and vivid acidity. The savoury lime peel bitterness on the finish is cleansing and salivating. Riddled in September 2019 and disgorged a year later.”

“Really meaty-yet-bracing nose opens out to more richness of a brioche-like sort. The acidity is so high that it tastes absolutely bone dry although there is probably quite a bit of dosage to judge from the tech spec for the 2013. Good definition – no mistaking this for champagne! Good, clean, long finish. Still youthful.”
“76% Pinot Noir, 24% Chardonnay grown in a single West Sussex vineyard. RS 9.7 g/l.

“The 2013 Tillington Single Vineyard, a blend of 24% Chardonnay and 76% Pinot Noir, was disgorged December 2017. It offers toasted almonds, crushed strawberry and traces of dried honey on the nose, and later just a touch of beeswax. “A blend of 76% Pinot Noir and 24% Chardonnay that was disgorged in July 2017, the 2013 Brut Tillington Single Vineyard opens in the glass with an exotic bouquet of musky peaches, mandarin, honeycomb and mango. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with good depth and dimension at the core, ripe but racy acids and an aromatic finish. To my palate, this gives Nytimber's cuvée 1086 a run for its money.”
“Ripe and juicy notes of fresh red and yellow apple come with a buttery shortbread note and an enticing overtone of candied redcurrant. The palate is wonderfully taut, has real tension, softened by very fine, lively bubbles which will only get creamier with more time in bottle. The ripeness of 2018 expresses itself in an exquisite balance: the wine shows generosity of body, of fruit, while remaining absolutely sleek, taut and brisk. The finish sounds a beautiful and serene note of harmonious freshness.”

“Liquorice nose. It's hard to believe the dosage is so low, because the ripeness and roundness of fruit on this wine is exceptional. Pin-point-fine bubbles snap the lemon and blueberry fruit into taut lines. There's a cool stoniness, like mossy concrete; an almost imperceptible peppery nuttiness; and then the wine momentarily widens into sweet pear before narrowing into a piercing finish.”
“A hint of nougat with fresh Red Delicious apple on the nose suggests both creaminess and liveliness. In addition, there are notes of flowers and honey. Good balance on the palate bursting with red apple fruit and with a rounded body. The long, creamy finish tastes of rye bread, sourdough and white pepper. Really elegant.”
“From the first vineyard planted by Ridgeview in 1995, this now is the well-deserved vintage Blanc de Blancs. Subtle hints of oyster shell blend in with bright, vivid, pale lemon freshness on the nose. The palate is as bright, as fresh, but it has a creamy, gentle vein as a counterweight and beautifully creamy mousse. There is lovely elegance and brightness. ”
“Tasted blind. Pale gold. Crème pâtissière nose. Broad and rich on the palate. Dry finish – thanks to some oak influence? Some evolution and very solid performance even if not the most delicate. Absolutely ready.”
“A hint of nettle plays amidst the green apple and lemon notes of the nose. The palate has very fine fizz that gently exudes even more green-apple and bright lemon notes. This is slender, taut and lively, and makes an ideal apéritif style delivering real, lasting and resounding refreshment.”

“The Bloomsbury was disgorged in November 2019. This is the signature cuvée from Ridgeview, and it was served to the Queen at her official Diamond Jubilee celebration. It is always a reliable performer, bursting with citrus lemon, lime, freshly sliced melon and honeysuckle. The energetic palate revives the senses, thanks to a vibrant line of acidity that imparts almost a steeliness toward the finish (not unlike a Blanc de Blancs.) “A lifted sense of lactic freshness hits the nose first. The flavors then broaden out into ripe lemon and subtle shortcrust notes. The slender palate foams with liveliness, underlining the light body, the brisk freshness and the lemony shortbread notes. The finish is dry, vivid and appetizing. A wonderful aperitif. ”
“Tasted blind. Mid orangey-pink. Pure fruity nose. Still quite chewy but well intentioned. Strange edge of Campari flavours. Fades a little fast but there is some interest here. Brisk. Well balanced.”
“The nose shines with the subtle richness of buttery, raw shortcrust pastry but also has a lovely inflection of smoke and lemon. This autolytic richness carries right over onto the slender, smooth palate where an edge of honey is just hinted at. The foam is fine and creamy, and the balance is striking. “The 2014 Brut Classic Cuvée spent 36 months on the lees and has a low dosage of 7g/L. It presents an attractive and quite intense bouquet of baked Braeburn apples, a touch of pear and a background note of melted candle wax. The palate is fresh with a creamy texture, harmonious and delineated. Those baked apples define the finish, and there is a welcome pinch of spice on the aftertaste. A fine cuvée from Roebuck Estates. ”
“Quite a complex, delicate nose with a bright, fruity finish. Clean and fresh. Very precise indeed. Zesty and well made. Really obviously English and (I nearly wrote 'but'!) a very fine young fizz with, indeed, exuberant red-berry flavours. Really clean finish, even if not desperately persistent.”
“100% Chardonnay clones 121 and 124. This was the second vintage of this wine and it was given the Simpsons' longest-ever lees-aging, 36 months. 20% of the base wine was barrel-aged. Disgorged January 2022. Dosage 8 g/l.
Real energy on the nose. Open texture on the palate but great vitality overall. Very pure and pretty with depth and potential.

“Rich, brocade, and tasting and smelling so intensely of orange that it's almost marmalade. Trace of toast. Long and deep. This is stunning. Spiced Seville-orange bitterness, but the roaring depth of that fruit and its acidity is magnificent. Don’t drink it too cold. This is a fire-sipping wine. Bring on the Comté.”
“Creamy, and initially lightly floral like the blossom of fruit trees, then dominated by a rich autolytic yeasty note and the first signs of honey. On the palate, this is impressively deep and rich. Mouth-filling and yet balanced by great freshness. A powerhouse of finesse, if that is not a contradiction in terms. Almost savoury on the finish thanks to that long lees ageing, ripe yellow fruit flavour balanced by citrusy acidity. Creamy riches, carried by the fine and persistent mousse. Very long. “Evocative redcurrant notes play on the nose. They become more intense on the palate where lively fizz lets them mix with lemon and pink grapefruit zestiness. This wine is lively and fresh but the exuberant surface is supported by a firm and taut structure of subtle autolysis that provides the perfect backdrop for all the tart, refreshing berry fruit.
