Owning just a few vineyards, Gosset purchase nearly all of the grapes required for production. The character of Aÿ has a strong influence on the House style, however the true identity of Gosset lies in the blocking of malolactic fermentation. A natural process where malic acid is converted to lactic acid, this can allow champagnes that don't tend to have fresher acidity to be more delicate and fruit-driven. Preventing this process gives the winemaking team at Gosset the chance to showcase the bright fruitiness and brisk acidity when the grapes are ripe and the quality is high - a hallmark of the House style.

Weather: The weather in 1998 was classic: very contrasted as is characteristic of Champagne, with a particularly hot August, the hottest since 1962. This was followed by heavy rain in early September, then dry, mild weather during harvest, creating ideal conditions for perfect grape maturity.

Tasting Note: A golden colour with a fine stream of bubbles. This has a delicate hint of floral notes with peaches and apricots on the nose. Initial flavours of pear and lemon lead to a mid-palate of vanilla and slight hints of coffee in the mouth. Due to a tiny production this is now a very rare and scarce prestige cuvée.
I was extremely impressed with the wines I tasted from Gosset. The house style is one of finely-sculpted wines that possess striking clarity and precision. Gosset favors oak aging for their top selections and malolactic fermentation is always blocked. The top of the line Celebris range sees very low dosage. From top to bottom this is an exceptional line-up from one of Champagne’s most historic houses.

The Gosset family have been producing champagne from vineyards in Aÿ since 1584, making them one of, if not the, oldest champagne producers in existence today. This small producer is run today by descendants Michel and Christian Gosset who manage around 24 acres of vineyard. Within the 24 acres are 14 acres which lie on the best hillsides of Aÿ in the Lieux-dits of Asniers, Croix Courcelle, Froide Terre and Loiselu. A further 8.5 acres are scattered across the Premier Crus of Avenay, Dizy and Mareuil. Finally, a tiny half acre plot of Grand Cru in Chouilly (a Chardonnay village) helps to create the distinctive Champagne Gosset style. Since 1994 it has been owned by the Cognac house, Frapin, and Jean-Pierre Cointreau is currently CEO of both companies.
Gosset has some rather famous neighbours, including Bollinger whose winery is located directly opposite. However, production is much below that of the larger houses, at around 1.3 million bottles. All Gosset champagnes are ‘recently disgorged’, normally with a high proportion of Chardonnay and without malolactic fermentation. This preserves acidity which in turn keeps the champagne fresh for much longer. The Gosset style is dry but not acidic, creamy, biscuity and yeasty.
Today the wines are presented in an antique bottle, an exact replica of the one used since the eighteenth century by Champagne Gosset.
