Champagne Gosset Overview
Gosset Celebris is the star of the Gosset range and the House prestige cuvée, produced only in exceptional years. The malic acid, skillfully preserved, gives freshness and elegance to this great cuvée, vintages of which will be enjoyed for several decades to come.

Weather: The weather in 1998 was classic: very contrasted as is characteristic of Champagne, with a particularly hot August, the hottest since 1962. This was followed by heavy rain in early September, then dry, mild weather during harvest, creating ideal conditions for perfect grape maturity.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 100% Grand Cru | Chardonnay: Chouilly, Cramant | Pinot Noir: Aÿ, Bouzy, Verzy
Grape Varieties: 64% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir
Ageing: 10 years on the lees
Dosage: 3.5 g/l
Drink: Now to 2030

Tasting Note: A golden colour with a fine stream of bubbles. This has a delicate hint of floral notes with peaches and apricots on the nose. Initial flavours of pear and lemon lead to a mid-palate of vanilla and slight hints of coffee in the mouth. Due to a tiny production this is now a very rare and scarce prestige cuvée.

“All winemakers strive for equilibrium in one way or another. Gosset, with their oxidative, opulent style, must battle to achieve equilibrium by having a high level of acid and low dosage. In this case they have chosen to make an Extra Brut, which is a choice that I would not have made. I think that a slightly higher dosage would have made the wine rather more pleasing to the public and more harmonious from the start as well as protecting it against future oxidation. There is a great deal to indicate that its maturity will reach a slender peak, which one will have to aim at in order to be completely satisfied. This wine is otherwise clear and beautifully golden with lively mousse and a pompous Aÿ-Pinot aroma of an animal and red fruit type. Full-bodied and quite divorced from its actual grape composition at present. A short, dry finish on an otherwise lovely taste trip in the country of Aÿ.”

“The 1998 Extra Brut Vintage Celebris is a beautifully focused, linear wine that sparkles on the palate with the essence of white peaches, pears, quince and flowers. This medium-bodied yet structured wine offers phenomenal persistence, along with chalky, minerally notes that give the wine its superb liveliness and sense of freshness. Like many wines in this line-up, the 1998 Extra Brut Vintage Celebris is a beautiful, contemplative wine that deserves serious attention. This is a great effort. The blend is 64% Chardonnay and 36% Pinot Noir. The cork is labeled C 7202, and this bottle was disgorged early December, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

I was extremely impressed with the wines I tasted from Gosset. The house style is one of finely-sculpted wines that possess striking clarity and precision. Gosset favors oak aging for their top selections and malolactic fermentation is always blocked. The top of the line Celebris range sees very low dosage. From top to bottom this is an exceptional line-up from one of Champagne’s most historic houses.
