Champagne Krug Overview
Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug's philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may have reached twenty years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance: something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle and its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars: the first prestige cuvée re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.

This is the 162nd creation of Krug Grande Cuvée. Based on 2006, it is a blend of 142 wines from eleven vintages: the oldest being 1990 and the youngest 2006. Reserve wines lend structure and depth to the base vintage wines, which seemed to be somewhat too homogenous. In the warm 2006 vintage, Krug's many plots in the villages of Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Villers-Marmery provided shine and minerality to the blend.

Krug ID: 214032 | Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée NV has a Krug ID on the back label which enables you to discover the story of that very bottle. You can do so using the smartphone App or on the Krug website.

“This is the 162nd creation of Krug Grande Cuvée, code 214032, which is based on the 2006 vintage. The oldest wine is from 1990 and the youngest 2006, with 142 wines from 11 vintages. Reserve wines lend structure and depth to this season's harvest, which seemed to be somewhat too homogeneous. It is this year's wines of many plots from the villages of Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize and Villers Mamery which proved the shine and minerality to the blend. 44% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Meunier. Dosage 6 g/l. Disgorged spring 2014.
Tasted blind. Rich nose, really quite creamy and opulent on the nose. Very slight edge of decay, but in a nice way. A tad soft; relatively low acid. Slightly lazy bead. Medium persistence. ”

“ID 313054. Magnum. Disgorged summer 2013. 44% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Meunier. Based on 2006 with reserves going back to 1990. 142 different wines!
Mid straw. Intense nose demands attention. Savoury. Pretty explosive texture. Bone-dry finish. This is so different from – more complex than – most champagnes! A wine to contemplate that works towards the finish like a great burgundy, but it’s definitely not mouthwash for a big reception. Very long. 12%”

“The code on this bottle is 213018, meaning it was the 18th disgorgement of the second quarter of 2013 (obvious, innit?!). And those disgorgements are not necessarily just of Grande Cuvée. This blend is apparently based on the 2006 vintage and contains no fewer than 142 different ingredients back to a drop of 1990. Very steely and 'mineral' on the nose. Tight and very dense. Still very uptight - even slightly austere at this early point in its evolution. Drink 2015-2022.”

“ID code: 413073, disgorged Oct 2013. Immensely rich on the nose, verging on apricot and quince but with the sweetness of brioche. Opens up to gingerbread. Big and bold and creamy on the palate, tasting softer than the Dom Pérignon 2004 that preceded it. Bright and crisp and zesty on the finish, fresher than I expected from the nose.”
Bought directly from Moët Hennessy, this is currently held in bond at Vinotheque in Burton-On-Trent, where it is cellared in ideal conditions and for same day deliveries small quantities are held in our London offices in a top of the range Eurocave
