Champagne Louis Roederer Overview
Fascinated by the aromatic diversity of Pinot Noir in Champagne, Louis Roederer use the structure and power of the Pinot Noir grapes from the Montagne de Reims to create their Brut Vintage blend. Exposed to the north-east, these grapes mature much more slowly, producing wines that are sometimes rough and closed at the beginning of the ageing process, with a character that intensifies and becomes more refined through ageing in wood over long periods. Thirty percent of the wine is matured in oak casks and Brut Vintage is matured for at least four years in the cellars and rested for six months after disgorgement to attain optimal maturity. It is the Pinot Noirs from the Grand Cru rated village of Verzenay in particular that give this champagnes its velvety, creamy and elegant palate.

Weather: The 2004 vintage saw an initial winter of mild temperatures with intermittent storms and hail. The spring and summer months were hot and sunny and the sugar levels late in September produced good quality fruits, especially for the Pinot Noir grapes. A huge harvest in general for the region. Overall many experts believe that 2004 is one of the greatest vintages of the last two decades.

Tasting Note: The palate is characteristic of a Louis Roederer vintage: a rich fullness is refined by the sweetness, acidity and tight blend of the Pinot Noir grapes of Verzenay. Tasting reveals notes of candied fruits, almond paste, white chocolate and caramel. This is a classic Brut: all the traditional flavours of champagne expressed with a refinement and precision that is quintessentially Roederer. We bought this parcel to show Louis Roederer Brut Vintage at its very best - when it is at least 10 years old and just starting to show the grace and forward fruit elegance from the great 2004 vintage.

“Pale honey colour. Seems sweeter and more evolved than the Ferrari Riserva 2004 served alongside. Really quite substantial and almost chunky. ”
Essi Avellan MW,,
Sep 2015
“Impressively toasty and rich fragrant but refined nose. Full, succulent palate with smooth texture and fine fluffy mousse. Big and bold but not without elegance or complexity. Long and concentrated. 2004 is such a good vintage for all Roederer, and this just brings so much pleasure now. Beautiful toast-complexted bright fruity nose. Refined and detailed. Lovely sweet and sour sensation.”
Joshua Greene,
Wine & Spirits,
Dec 2011
“An open jazz riff on white limestone, this is so dry, austere and sumptuous that it defines umami. Cool, rich, mineral, mouthwatering. Pretty smart vintage Champagne: It's powerful in its flavor depth, though not as wildly powerful as Cristal.”
Roger Voss,
Wine Enthusiast,
Dec 2010
“A great celebration of the fine 2004 vintage, this wine reveals both generosity and a steely resolve. It has a cool elegance as well, giving it a sense of refinement, while still preserving the Roederer richness. The tight acidity holds the wine together and promises long aging.”
Jancis Robinson MW,,
Mar 2010
“Straightforward, fresh nose. Neat and compact. Gentle, well balanced. Tight knit and well balanced without anything out of place though it’s not the most nuanced. Very vigorous. Lots of freshness. But a bit astringent and metallic on the finish.”
Joshua Greene,
Wine & Spirits,
Dec 2009
“The bold fruit flavors make this a wine of primary colors for now, from peach to kiwi, grapefruit and strawberry. The fruit is fragrant and lush while the wine's acidity keeps it mouthwatering and completely dry. A zesty Champagne that's built to age...”
