Champagne Louis Roederer Overview
Fascinated by the aromatic diversity of Pinot Noir in Champagne, Louis Roederer use the structure and power of the Pinot Noir grapes from the Montagne de Reims to create their Brut Vintage blend. Exposed to the north-east, these grapes mature much more slowly, producing wines that are sometimes rough and closed at the beginning of the ageing process, with a character that intensifies and becomes more refined through ageing in wood over long periods. Thirty percent of the wine is matured in oak casks and Brut Vintage is matured for at least four years in the cellars and rested for six months after disgorgement to attain optimal maturity. It is the Pinot Noirs from the Grand Cru rated village of Verzenay in particular that give this champagnes its velvety, creamy and elegant palate.

Weather: The 2009 vintage was a continental, sunny year with a real winter that was very cold and dry followed by a glorious sun-filled summer and almost no rain in August and September. The harvest was incomparable in terms of quality and produced consistent, fresh and crunchy grapes.

News Article: Louis Roederer Brut Vintage 2009 Magnum placed second in our comprehensive Prestige Cuvée vs Vintage blind tasting with Jancis Robinson MW in October 2017. Read the full write-up here.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: 90% Grand & Premier Cru
Grape Varieties: 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay
Ageing: 4 years on the lees
Dosage: 8-10 g/l
Drink: Now to 2029

Tasting Note: A ravishing bouquet on the nose which is generous and deep, ruled by the red fruits that dominate the blend. Orchard fruits on the palate combine with soft, mineral qualities. With age, this vintage is certain to develop and increase in structure.

“90% grand and premier crus. 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay. Aged for seven years on the lees. Disgorged 2017. Dosage 8 g/l.
Tasted blind. Pale straw. Very complete and satisfying. Hint of crème pâtissière on the nose. Great tension and a great drink. Already appealing. But perhaps not massively long. Rich! Fun to drink now. 2009?
Drink 2017-2024”

“The 2009 Brut Vintage is a rich, racy wine. Dried apricot, pear, spice, smoke and anise notes give the 2009 its overt, voluptuous personality. Creamy and ample on the palate, the 2009 Brut Vintage captures all of the radiance and intensity of this ripe vintage. This is an especially succulent style, but it all works nicely. It's not exactly a mini-Cristal, but it will give readers a glimpse into what makes these Champagnes so compelling, at a fraction of the price.”
