New vintage release Billecart Salmon Louis Salmon Blanc de Blancs 2013 with Essi Avellan at Fredericks Islington.

Billecart-Salmon’s pure-Chardonnay vintage is a blend of Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte des Blancs. Cramant and Chouilly for its finess, Avize for its power and Mesnil-sur-Oger for its structure and longevity. Named in honour of the brother of Elisabeth Salmon, who founded the house in 1818 with her husband Nicolas Francois.

Weather: The 2013 winemaking year proved a welcome reconnection with the glorious past of late harvest vintages. After a cold, wet winter, spring was grey, quite cool and extremely rainy. The vines began budding about two weeks later than the average for the decade, a delay that lasted all the way until the harvest. The hot and dry summer was the sunniest on record in the Champagne region, proving particularly beneficial for the quality of the grapes. Rain in early September quickly ceded to easterly winds that kept the grapes healthy until they were picked.

““The 2013 Brut Blancs de Blancs Louis Salmon is a powerful, dense Champagne that captures all the intensity of this late-ripening year. Apricot, peach, tangerine oil, mint and tropical inflections fill out the layers. Dense and very young, the 2013 is built for the cellar. It’s a seriously impressive wine from Billecart-Salmon. The blend is 44% Cramant, 26% Chouilly, 25% Le Mesnil and 5% Oiry, done entirely in tank with full malolactic fermentation. ””
