Club Oenologique have released their 2024 Grower Champagne Report with Essi Avellan MW
The quality of grower Champagne has reached unprecedented levels. Gone are the days of heavy-handed oak and tolerance towards various winemaking faults. Over the years we have witnessed many of the early pioneers reach higher and higher quality through their never-ending quest for perfection.
Altogether, 319 Champagnes made it past the 88-point publication threshold.
This report’s producers very much spearhead Champagne’s new wave of sustainable, organic and biodynamic grower production (even if not all of them carry certifications). But one must bear in mind that they represent only a fraction of the 2000+ strong universe of grower Champagne. Also, defining small-producer Champagne is increasingly challenging as many are no longer registered as RM (récoltant-manipulant) but might have gone négociant, either to expand production or for other reasons.
Last year’s Club Oenologique’s Champagne Report 2023 can be found here. Tasting notes and scores (featuring only those wines scoring 90 points and above).
