Laurent-Perrier are one of the last champagne houses to release their 2008 vintage; most were released sometime over the last 4 years and some houses have even begun launching their prestige cuvées from 2008. This means Laurent-Perrier Vintage 2008 has enjoyed extended lees ageing: nine years in total (an exceptionally long ageing period for a vintage tier champagne), which has helped build up layers of flavour and further enrich its elegant texture.
We tasted a preview with Chef de Cave Michel Fauconnet earlier this year, who commented on the rarity of having three good vintages in a row (2006, 2007, 2008), sharing his affection for the latter: “1976, 1990 and 2008 are my favourite years for vinification”.
Surprised by its full-bodied richness and racy acidity – unusual characteristics for a champagne so young – we scored it 18/20. This latest release is undoubtedly their best since the equally impressive Laurent-Perrier Vintage 2002. Further, its favourable release price (currently £57.95 per bottle with Mix 6 Pricing) makes Laurent-Perrier Vintage 2008 a great value choice for current drinking and, for the patient consumer, it has outstanding ageing potential thanks to the unique characteristics of 2008.
As with other 2008 releases, we are expecting Laurent-Perrier Vintage 2008 to sell quickly. Please let us know if you would like an allocation.
Laurent-Perrier Vintage 2008 | 18/20 50% CH, 50% PN | Lees Ageing: 8 Years | Dosage: 8 g/l Lots of fresh apples, some hints of tropical flavour come through then on the palate it seems very fresh, light and delicate but with a good weight of fruit. The texture from the long lees ageing seems quite forward. Going back a few minutes later it shows some of the racy acidity that is distinctive of 2008. This is fantastic now and will age beautifully. |
Essi Avellan MW | 92-95/100 Amazing purity of Chardonnay dominates this precise, extremely vivacious wine of notable nervosity of freshness. Lot of green apple, pear and apricot notes alongside emerging reductive toasty charm. Truly classy and built to last. |
William Keeley, Wine Advocate | 93/100 “The 2008 Brut Millésimé opens in the glass with lovely aromas of lemon oil, green apple, warm biscuits, iodine and mandarin. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, with an elegantly layered core, a fine, pinpoint mousse and racy balancing acids, concluding with a long and incipiently biscuity finish. This is a classy vintage Champagne that will develop beautiful complexity in the cellar. 2018 – 2035.” |
