On 23rd August 2018, eight expert judges tasted nearly 200 bottles of champagne for the annual 2018 Champagne Masters, hosted by The Drinks Business. With an average 98-point score across the board, one particular cuvée stood out as the best this year: Piper-Heidsieck Rare 1998.
Available today in magnums only, judge and journalist Patrick Schmitt wrote of this stunning cuvée: “I wasn’t alone in declaring it an exceptional fizz – and even asked the competition organiser, Chloé Beral, to stopper the cuvée immediately, so I could try it later on that same day (and was subsequently delighted to discover it came in a large format, and tasted even better a touch warmer).”
