Description & Technical Information
-
This 1966 is the third consecutive Limited Edition release of Taylor's as a 50th year anniversary of the wine. Taylor's hold one of the most extensive reserves of very old cask-aged port of any producer. These reserves include a unique collection of rare Single Harvest Ports. These ports are produced from a single year and age to full maturity in seasoned oak casks, displaying the vintage on the label. Single Harvest Ports are ready for immediate drinking and do not need to be decanted.

Weather: An exceptionally wet winter prepared the vines for a hot, dry summer. In August temperatures of 45C were recorded twice at Pinhao in the heart of the Cima Corgo but with so much ground water, the grapes did not dry up or raisinise. Rain finally arrived during the harvest but with yields well-down on average, the crop came to no harm. The fermentations were helped by cool weather and musts registered higher than average readings with excellent colour. It was clear at the end of the harvest that a fine vintage was in prospect.

Tasting Note: A broad amber colour with olive-green highlights. On the nose a complex variety of orange and marmalade, combined with a discreet vanilla oakiness and warm nutty notes of walnut and marzipan. The palate is very smooth and honeyed, leading to an apricot and fig finish: this is a big and lush port where the flavours linger deliciously. An absolutely amazing mouthful of port.

Taylor's Single Harvest Port 1966 is presented in a magnificent branded wooden box.

Wine Spectator
“Very elegant, with notes of tobacco and cedar to the lush butter cream, ripe pear and dried apricot flavors. Seductive tropical fruit and spice notes linger on the endless finish, revealing citrusy hints. Drink now.”

Wine Enthusiast
“One of a series of releases of single harvest wines, this smooth, wood-aged Port is rich and still full of fruit. Ripe date and raisin flavors are lifted by acidity, with flavors from the wood aging giving great balance. Tawny in character, this beautiful wine is complex and ready to drink”

Robert Parker
“The NV 20 Year Old Tawny was bottled with a bar top cork in 2013. It comes in at 111.6 grams per liter of residual sugar. A big mouthful, this is a 20 that first coats the palate and then ends with silky texture and concentrated flavor. Very graceful, it is not as impressive in terms of mid-palate density, but it is more than respectable. It shows fine complexity, appropriate to its age category. The finish seals the deal, more lingering and gripping than I expected from the first taste. It is another delicious Tawny from the Taylor Fladgate group this issue, so dig in. All of the Tawnies here have bar top corks. What that typically means is that they are ready to drink and not expected to be aged in the bottle. Barring cork failures, of course, Tawnies are very resistant and can be held a long, long time. They are certainly completely ready to drink now, though. (MS) ”
