From 18:00 Essi will be hosting this tasting, guiding us through eight champagnes that have been recently released. This is an informal tasting aimed at all levels of knowledge. Feel free to come and taste and ask lots of questions or sit quietly and sip and enjoy the range of champagne.
Champagne Glass 1
The World's leading Champagne critic and Master of Wine Essi Avellan MW will guide us through these new releases with details on the condition of the grapes at harvest and then share information about the key points of winemaking that influence the taste in the glass. There are some great new vintages launching in spring 2024 and this is a great chance to taste and discover the stories behind the label. There will be plenty of time to ask your questions and be part of the live voting on the TFB app. Nick will join Essi to co-host.

Essi Avellan MW - The Champagne Masterclass will be presented by Essi Avellan MW, who just last year completed her comprehensive book on Champagne. Finland’s first Master of Wine, Essi is the author of several wine books and is a reputed wine judge for the Champagne & Sparkling World Wine Championships. Recently Essi has re-written Tom Stevenson's Wine Encyclopedia and the fourth edition is now published and available to buy. Read about Essi Avellan's Champagne book here.

Nick Baker The founder of The Finest Bubble, Nick has worked in the wine industry since leaving university in 1989, starting in sales and moving on to marketing. He spent a year working with MMD and Louis Roederer before getting the taste for California and heading to Sonoma County for a few years. Champagne Glass 1He set up TFB in 2014, testing the concept of same day delivery in London for Champagne. The website grew quickly and the service is now even more focused: delivering to London within two hours from a range of 800+ Champagnes and English sparkling wines. Nick spends time each year in Reims and Épernay researching new producers, future releases and writing up the news on TFB.

The venue Fredericks was established in Camden Passage by Louis Segal in 1969 and still run by the Segal family. Originally a pub (The Duke of Sussex who was named Frederick, hence the name) was then converted into a private house, Louis Segal purchased the property and set about running Frederick’s as a restaurant. Since then they have focussed on; excellent food, quality service and an extensive and interesting wine list. Popularity allowed them to build The Conservatory in 1982, The Clarence room in 1990 and The Club room in 2014. In 2019 they celebrated their 50th year of being a core part of the Islington food scene.
